Guest guest
hi everyone, vaishnavas(hare krishna's) call themselves Vegetarians. But there is a difference between being "vegetarian" and "lacto-vegetarian". Milk and dairy products are not vegetables.Besides, one species consuming milk of another is against the order of nature-- there is exploitation and deprivation involved. The calf is deprived of it's natural food and the cow is used as a milk producing factory. -- isn't that unethical? The Bhagvad-Gita clearly says that foods offerable to the lord and also fit for human consumption are --- patram pushpam phalam toyam. Where does milk come in? vivek. ________ Great Travel Deals, Airfares, Hotels on http://r.rediff.com/r?www.journeymart.com/rediff/travel.asp&&sign&&jmart

Guest guest
I appreciate your concern more than most. The milk is the West, most of the world over, is "murder milk", meaning, that they kill the dairy cows when they're done giving milk, and then eat them. Vaisnavas who use milk from stores are supporting the cow slaughter system, and teaching others that such milk is pleasing to Krishna. I am therefore vegan, or, not eating milk, cheese, etc. It took me a long time to finally come to this point, and it took help. Many devotees of Krishna are becoming vegan, or giving up milk completely. It's not necessary for health. I suppose if one is assured of no cow slaughter, then it's OK. This is very rare, found perhaps only here and there in India. Still, milk is not necessary, so keeping cows is not necessary. Once you are off milk for awhile, it feels totally strange to even see it- something that comes out of the body of an animal. It gets repulsive. There are good vegan, even raw, substitutes for all the by products. More healthy for you, more healthy for earth, and no animal slaughter. das g. Guest guest
Dear Das, I have not given up milk myself and so I am not in a position to advise others to do it.My post was not meant to advise anyone.I was just pointing out the difference between veg and lacto-veg and also the fact that "patram pushpam phalam toyam" does not include milk. I did attempt becoming pure vegan once but restarted milk after about 2 months because I started feeling weak (B12 deficiency perhaps as Denise pointed out). Consider this-- If you suffered from an infection, what would you do? If you took antibiotics, you would be killing microbes. The problem is that if you start seeing sin everywhere-- life becomes miserable. Consider this too-- Material nature is intrinsically predatory.I know it is illusion and one suffers due to misidentification -- but the suffering is real. I know that it is ultimately karma. But why is the material world intrinsically predatory? I mean the structure, the arrangement. Would it not mean that god is a sadist,a sort of hitler? I agree that the purpose is to make one realise the futility of remaining here -- but couldn't it be done in an easier way? Coming back to the topic,I agree that milk consumption would be OK only if there were no slaughter and cows were well looked after.not otherwise. --- But such a thing is not possible in a crowded city. Ultimately one cannot have very high moral standards in kali-yug -- atleast consuming milk if far far better than killing. Best regards, vivek.
