Sage Agastya (spelled Agathiyar in Tamil) is a towering legendary

figure in TamilNadu, South India. He wrote the grammer of Tamil

language and is one of the leading Siddhars (accomplished beings) of

Tamil 18 Siddhar tradition. His contributions span multiple areas -

language, medicine, yoga, nadi astrology, etc. He along with other

siddhars have developed Siddha medicine system, which is still

practised in South India. Danwantri (father of Ayurveda) is also

considered as one of the 18 siddhars but ayurveda is different from

siddha medicine.

Many people claim to have Agathiyar (Agastya) nadi (on palm leaves)

granthas. I dont know the authentic ones. One place to look for is

Vaitheeswaran Koil, where many families have the nadi granthas of

various Siddhars like Agathiyar, Bogar, etc and the Sapta rishis -

Vashistar, Vishwamithra, etc.

Is Agathiyar still alive? I dont know. He is believed to have

conquered death and some believe he is still living in Pothigai hills

in TamilNadu, India. They also believe that only people who

rigorously mediate to see him can see him. Many on the list may be

aware of Babaji - the himalayan yogi living for many centuries.

People familiar with Autobiography of a Yogi by by Paramahansa

Yogananda may have heard of Babaji. Siddhars Agathiyar and Bogar are

the gurus of Babaji. For more details, you may want to refer to the

book "Babaji and the 18 Siddha Kriya Yoga Tradition" by Marshal

Govindan.

BTW, though the Siddhar tradition is called 18 Tamil Siddhar

tradition, the Siddhars were not all from Tamil Nadu and they wrote

in either Tamil (Thirumoolar, Agathiyar, Bogar) or Sanskrit (Eg.

Narada, Patanjali, Danwantri) or sometimes both. The tamil Siddhar

tradition is also sometimes called 18 Siddhar tradition, but the

number of Siddhars is more than 18.

in the south who have traditionally inherited these rare scripts.
