Guest guest
Interesting what you say about Vedic Astrology. Every old institution has old and out of date approaches to the modern world, but the insights into the science only have to be expresed anew and maybe more insights added. Traditional Vedic Astrology by its firmly closed family or parampara transmission methods has preserved its ignorance along with its knowledge. So it needs to wake up to todays world. But modern western astrology is largely obsessed with petty and imaginary egocentric issues, such as the Ben Affleck one you just described, which traditional Vedic has almost never succumbed to. If you want an astrology that addresses only adolescent Kali Yuga concerns then you can dive into the imaginary world being created out there, or you can remain with the wise teaching of ages that will not change over the centuries. Your correspondent Chandrasekhar hit the nail on the head when he spoke of the need to understand the rationale behind the science. Guest guest
Hi Chandrashekhar, Thanks for responding to my initial post on this topic. However, I must maintain my premise. Far too many Vedic Astrologers, or students, spend entirely too much time keeping their noses in old books, instead of breathing new life into Vedic Astrology. For example, take the combination known as the Kala Sarpa Yoga. I cannot tell you how many VA's have absolutely no idea what that means TODAY, in the modern, post 20th century Western World. Here's another - Kuja Dosha. There's a topic that is sure to get many a Vedic Astrologer hopping, but so few have no idea again, how to apply that to today's times and climes. There are many other areas of Vedic Astrology that poses problems, but I trust you see my point. While computer strength and speed have caught up with the sophistication of Vedic Astrology, its updating in terms of modernity in the Western World has not. Lists such as this one proves that everyday and every night. For the past 4 years, I have worked very hard to bring Vedic Astrology up to date, to have it "get with the times", and bring it out of the ancient past of India. So much of what I discussed here and elsewhere in the internet forum Vedic Astrological world has so little to do with what is going on NOW and so much to do with, what this old rule and that ancient rule means. While it certainly is profitable to learn and get a grasp of the basics and the classics out of which they come, it does none of us any good to cling to the insights that were gleaned over 1,000 years ago. Before anyone thinks I want to throw the baby out with the bath water, please let me be clear. What I'm saying is, that Vedic Astrology has to go the way of Modern Western Astrology, that is to say, that it has to drop its fatalistic tonality and embracethe changning winds of the Modern World, if it is to be meaningful, if it is to survive. I think this is one of the cheif reasons why Vedic Astrology has seen some of its biggest growth OUTSIDE OF INDIA. Differing perspectives on a thing can only help that thing get stronger. Hart deFouw, a noted Canadian Jyotishi, has laid out all of these thoughts and more in a beautifully written chapter in the anthology by Weiser Books, "Eastern Systems for Western Astrologers". His chpater is called, "The Humanism of Vedic Astrology", and I consider it required reading for anyone that is serious about what it is that I'm talking about in this email concerning Vedic Astrology. Lastly, when was the last time that an analysis has appeared here or any other Vedic Astrological forum, of a horoscope, that was insightful, meaningful, sensitive? Not merely an "you are this, you are that" "reading", but a careful and pointed analysis of potentials that the Vedic Astrological horoscope represents? I for one have seen many, many charts discussed in the ways I described in the former. It is rare to see it discussed in the latter. Consider if you will, the horoscope of the famous actor Ben Affleck (Aug 15, 1972, 2:53am PDT, Berkley, CA, USA; Vedic Asc, Lahiri, 15 Gem 05). How could we use the wonderous, ancient Science of Light in such a way that recognized Affleck's humanity, that was sensitive to his current circumstance with regards to his romantic involvement with actress Jeniffer Lopez? Do we fashion a sensitive, meaningful analysis and enter into a discussion with Affleck - or, do we launch into a one-sided, "performance" style "reading", a throwback to another time, in another place? This, I leave to you, and all others reading this, to answer. In due course, I will offer my musings on Mr. Affleck's horoscope. Comments, Please...
