Guest guest
Here's a good one from Das: I got this message: Phone the White house at 202-456-1111. A machine will detain you a moment and then a pleasant operator will thank you for saying "I oppose" or I "approve of" the proposed war against Iraq. I thought: Yeah right, what a great way to collect a database of a certain class of people. Phone number, to identity, to SS#, lickety split, tracked then as part of a "general opinion poll" database on anti usual sentiments... as per the ultra center. The letter went on to say "Pres. Bush wants to know how we feel about the war". Gosh. How sincere of him. Guest guest
Geee, folks, what impresses me is the sideways look taken at this poll. Clinton polled everyone about everything, and modified his actions according to the loudest voice from the polls. I see this as a way for public expression of their sentiments without taking umpteen days out of the President's time to collect numbers on how people feel. If Clinton's polling everyone about everything was not offensive to you, then your expression of distrust may be illogical and not very sincere when you have a problem with Bush polling the American public as his predecessor did. Oh, well, politics goes like that, doesn't it! Love to all, Carol
Guest guest
All - Greetings! There will be people who don't agree with me... I, for one, don't think it's anyone trying to collect anything other than exactly what they said - opinions. I also don't think Mr. Bush will change his mind BASED on those opinions. I simply think it's a way of measuring the difference (er, distance), if any, between his plans, and public opinion. My guess is that his mind is made up about WHAT he's going to initiate - the question is HOW. And I for one (as a former Marine) think we should have killed (preferable) or at least deposed Saddam back in '91 while we were there. Now, I believe that his removal is necessary as well as inevitable, but that we should just "go" there without at least going through the motions of offering Saddam the chance to live up to the UN Sanctions. He will, of course, not allow this, or he will cheat as he has in the past. THEN, he can be legitimately removed without prejudice. ....And I agree with you Carolhook, about Clinton's polling everyone. That CLEARLY was a most insincere and dishonest presidency. Yet he was popular beyond belief. Perhaps we really DO get the leaders we deserve. I hope not. I hope we are better than that.
