Guest guest
Dear GList Group: Can someone tell me how the virus will affect Macs with Outlook Express, which I use, except for this email list, I use my web site email? I generally only open the mail attachments that have the moon and planetary calendars, I think from Natabara? I would appreciate knowing if the virus can affect ONLY if you open the attachements or IF you ONLY open the emails, thanks. Guest guest
now I will help you think: When you download your email, do you see a long delay sometimes these days? If so, then you are getting your email in a browswer such as Netscape or Outlook, and you are setup such that the email messages, including attachments, are being downloaded to your machine, and probably deleted off your email server, wherever it is located, and this is typical. So, if you are getting delays these days, and you find you are getting messages which contain these common viruses, messages with stupid names and known addresses, that don't make sense, like your own name sending you some message you wrote 2 years ago to someone who's now dead... Well anyway... these Viruse's are all written to work only on the Windows operating system. That do not run on a Mac. Even if you open them, they won't do anything. In your email browser, pretty much these days, you can delete any email message which is say over a couple K in size. I mean, any real letter, is 1 to 5 K, but these viruses are coming in at over 100K. So there's a huge difference. The extension on things affects how they will run. If you see a letter from a known friend, and it contains a real message from them, and an attachment ending in .pdf then that is an Acrobat file which is good. If you see an attachment ending in .exe, then bewarned, that's a program that can actually run, and literally do ANYTHING IT"S PROGRAMMED TO DO So of course, watch out for and respect anything ending in .exe Same with .pif, .bat and others. Learn where attachments are downloaded to. Once I opened one of these attachments in Word, and examined it's contents before double clicking on it as attachment. In it, I could clearly see code which examined your address book, took the contents, sent them to a server in the Phillipines, and then sent everyone of them the virus on an email saying "I love you". That was years ago. But the point is, you have more control that you think. Attachments are downloaded to a certain place. Also, you can control what you see in say Windows Explorer or when you open "My computer". In any case, learn how to control what you see, learn how to see all files, including hidden, show all extensions, neve click on .exe or .pif or .bat extension attachments unless you know what you're doing, otherwise what you'll be doing very soon is restoring your hard drive completely. So learn now. It's time. The redcoats are coming. And go Mac. Because with Steve, Jobs get done, and with Bill, Gates of hell swing wide.... Because you can go with a More Affable Character or a Pissy Complications it's up to you......
Guest guest
Dear Janna <<I generally only open the mail attachments that have the moon and planetary calendars, I think from Natabara?>> I do never send attachments of calendars to the list because of the virus running around. If anybody wants the format calendar can get it from my website, which looks better than the one that i send normally in email format, to avoid virus. Although i have an anti-virus programe, someone can copy my address and send virus. I repeat i never send attachment to a list, and when i do send them to a friend, i always explain clearly and extensible what the attachment is about. Virus rarely explain the attachments well, they do only attract the curiosity, but becaue they are send by very envious people, they are likely to get smarter, but they are likely to get a very bad karma sooner or later. They may not believe in karma, but they will pay. I do normally erase any email with attachments sent by list members (sorry guys). Even if my antivirus tells me that they are ok. better safe than sorry. Best wishes natabara Das
Guest guest
Dear Natabara, Thank you for your reply. It may have been Deepak who sends the attachments that I open if they are in pdf format. Even though I have a Mac (and Das explained something about thisin his reply to me), I'm cautious because I use Outlook Express and every email that I get opens when I select it. Only then can I delete it. I worry about the "virus" getting the email addresses somehow, even though I don't have enough technical knowledge about this either. But to be safe, I don't open anything unless I know the person who sent it personally and only then if they have a clear indication of what 's in the attachment. Does anyone know if the virus can hit a computer just through the email?
