Guest guest
Nice question about decanates. I will explain. "In a vedic astrology book called The Brihajjatakam of Varaha Mihira translated by Swami Vijnanananda, we read in Chapter 25-14. "If the Decanates occupied by the Sun or the Moon whichever is powerful, be ruled by Jupiter, the individual has come from Devaloka, the land of the Devas; if ruled by Moon or Venus, the person has come from Pitriloka, the land of the Fathers; if ruled by Sun or Mars, the person has come from the world oflower animals, and if ruled by Saturn or Mercury, the person has come from the region of hell." me In this "equation", we have that the Sun or Moon should be powerful than the other. We can see this by studying which of them is exalted or stronger than the other. Then, the stronger of them two, should be in a decanate. Just like we have 12 signs of the zodiac, we have 36 decanates or 2 per each sing. For example, the first sign Aries goes from 0° to 30°. Therfore, the first decanate of Aries runs from 0° to 10°, the 2nd decanate runs from 10° to 20°, and the 3rd and last decanate in Aries runs from 20° to 30° of Aries. We have 4 elements that are: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Of the 12 signs of the zodiac we have 3 signs per element or 3 X 4 = 12. Because the sign of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are of fire element, their 3 decanates are ruled by those signs that have a fire element. For example, Aries has 3 decanates that are ruled by Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Leo has the decanates of Leo, Sagittarius and Aries. And Sagittarius has decanates Sagittarius, Leo and Aries. Therefore, of the most powerful of the Sun and Moon, should be in any of those decanates in the Vedic horoscope. For example, if the Sun is the most powerful in the chart, by being exalted in Aries, we have to see the longitude of the Sun, say 23° of Aries. Therefore, we can see that the Sun is in the 3rd decanate of Aries, which is ruled by Sagittarius. Because Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, then according to the rule above, the native comes from devaloka. "If the lord of the Decanate occupied by the sun or the Moon, whichever is powerful, be in his exaltation, the past life was also of an exalted character; if middling, the character was also middling, and if detrimental, the character was also low." me Therefore, following the same example, we apply the next rule. In this case we have to study the position of Jupiter, the host of the decanate where we see the Sun. If Jupiter is in Cancer, we say that it is exalted and therefore, the previous position was of an exalted nature. If however, Jupiter is in a middling sign, the life was of middling character. And if Jupiter is in Capricorn, or in debilitation, the position was low in nature. Best wishes Natabara Das

Guest guest
Dear Natabara, I would like to know more about this.is it that the first decanate is ruled by the sign itself, the second and third are ruled by the signs fifth and ninth from it respectively? You have mentioned that there are three signs per element.which three come under each? Sometimes it may be difficult to determine who is more powerful between sun and moon(say, both exalted or both debilitated)---is there a definite procedure for this? with best regards, vivek.
