India-Pakistan and the stock market

Dear Friends,

In light of my recent posts on the stock market, I've been wondering what

sort of event might trigger such a sharp downturn. I have no certain

answers to this, but looking at the ongoing tensions between India and

Pakistan gives one pause. Some astrologers have predicted that a war is

very possible, even likely. While my analysis does provide some support

for that view, I'm hesitant to predict such a cataclysmic event for obvious

reasons. I feel that global economic disruption is better described by the

planetary movements in the India chart in the last week of January.

So far, I have chosen to focus on the India chart because the Pakistan

presents the added complication of relocation, as the capital has moved

from Karachi to Islamabad. The India chart (Aug 15 1947, 00.00 IST Delhi,

Asc:7Ta46) is heavily afflicted right now. Using vimshottari dashas, India

is running Venus-Jupiter. In this Taurus rising chart, lagnesh Venus

22Cn33 is severely afflicted in the 3rd house by virtue of a close

conjunction with two first rate malefics, Saturn 20Cn28 and Pluto 20Cn04.

This is really a double-barrelled shotgun pointed straight at Venus, the

lagnesh. No wonder India has had more than its share of problems since

independence! Jupiter 25Li52 appears to be in relatively good shape in the

rashi chart as it is unaspected, however being in Venus' sign of Libra

certainly does it no favours. Venus' afflictions are thereby shared in

some part with Jupiter. The navamsha chart, however, shows Jupiter's real

weakness. As the navamsha lagnesh (9Pi56 rises), Jupiter 22Ta53 is almost

exactly conjunct Neptune 21Ta41. Neptune with any 1st house indication

will tend to weaken or drain vitality and this navamsha chart is very much

afflicted as a result. A very efficient transiting Saturn in Taurus

therefore afflicts not only the rashi lagna (Taurus) and the navamsha

lagnesh (in Taurus) , but all those planets in the rashi 3rd house in

Cancer: Moon, Mercury, Pluto, Saturn, Venus, and Sun. At present, it is

only about one degree from casting an exact 3H aspect to 2L of wealth,

Mercury 13Cn40. This perhaps relates to the imminent stock collapse more

than anything to do with Pakistan. To add to 2L Mercury's problems,

transiting Neptune is just past an exact conjunction at 14Cp09, an

influence that can only undermine the wealth building efforts of the

country. In addition, transiting Pluto 22Sc42 is also almost exactly

squaring this navamsha lagnesh Jupiter 22Ta53 and this strongly supports

the notion of some coercive force being applied to the country. This force

could be economic, as the global capital markets are largely the domain of

the western world, but there is an undertone of conflict here as well. It

remains a possibility that hostilities will boil over at this time.

Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto's transits are fairly slow moving so other

timing mechanisms are needed. Here I use western progressions (cast for

today, Jan 17) which give another dimension to the influences on the

planets. First, minor progressed (MP) Mars 21Cn23 is exactly conjunct the

IC/4H cusp 21Cn34. This could indicate a variety of events including an

attack on the land(4H), nonetheless, it is almost certainly negative. MP

Asc 2Ge21 is exactly conjunct with natal Uranus 2Ge09. This clearly shows

that a shocking or surprising event, possibly to do with a 2nd house matter

(Uranus is in the 2nd house) such as the economy, although one should note

that Mars is also there in the 2nd house so some of that Martian

conflict-type energy may also be energized at this time. What's even more

strking about that combination is that transiting Rahu is in near exact

conjunction 1Ge36. At the time of the crash on the 25th or 28th, it will

have moved to about 1Ge06, still well within orb. Even more amazingly,

this trifecta of MP Asc/natal Uranus/transiting Rahu hit occurs just one

degree from the Sripati 2H cusp of 2Ge26, indicating that sharp sudden

economic reversals are likely. Finally, MP MC 16Aq44 is in exact

conjunction with MP Rahu 16Aq22. Because of its changeability, hits to

Rahu should be interpreted cautiously, although it's difficult to imagine

good results here given that Rahu's dispositor is dasha lord Venus, which

is closely afflicted by Saturn and Pluto. Venus here could represent

wealth as it is a secondary karaka, or the country as a whole (lagnesh) or

the 6th lord (enemies). As minor progressed angles move about one degree

every ten days, both of these angular hits will still be well within orb

next week.

The tertiary progressions (TP) tell a similarily woeful tale. TP Asc 4Ta47

is in a near exact conjunction with natal Rahu 5Ta10. This is another Rahu

hit that suggests loss, restriction, and the oppressive exercise of power

given the influences on 1L/6L Venus outlined above. Even worse perhaps, is

TP MC 18Cp47 is moving into exact opposition to those very malefic planets

in the rashi chart, Saturn 20Cn28 and Pluto 20Cn04. Tertiary progressed

angles moved more slowly than minor progressed ones, about one degree a

month, however, these are basically in orb now and could be considered to

be effective given sufficient transit triggers. In sum, both of these sets

of progressions are heavily loaded for the present time because all four

progressed angles are making significant hits. This is fairly unusual and

speaks to the importance of the event that lies just around the corner.

Also required are the triggers that will release the energy of the

progressed hits and the Saturn transits. There are a number of

possibilities and to some extent this is little more than guesswork on my

part, but here are a few ideas. Mars is always the first place to look.

It's in Pisces now and therefore aspects its natal position (7Ge) in the

2nd house of wealth on Jan 20th so that's a possibility. More likely, I

think, is Mars' hit to the navamsha lagna at 9Pi56. Transiting Mars will

conjunct this point on Jan 23th, a date very close to Jan 25th mentioned by

Houck. I also note that the Moon will be transiting Gemini, the 2nd house

again, on Jan 26-27. This isn't just significant because it's the 2nd

house, but the Moon has no bindus there and as a sign, Gemini has only 19

bindus. In other words, it's extremely weak. Parenthetically, I have to

wonder if this 19-bindu 2nd house is part of the reason for India's endless

struggle whith poverty. Other key ashtakavarga transits look similarly

weak. Dasha and lagna lord Venus is transiting the sign with its lowest

number of bindus, namely 1 in Capricorn, a sign that only contains a total

of 20. Transiting bhuktie lord Jupiter has a marginal 3 bindus in Gemini

and as noted above, that sign contains only 19 bindus in total. Overall,

not good at all.

On the question of the possibility of war, if you look at the D-6

shashtamsha chart which is symbolic of conflict and obstacles of all types,

a disturbing picture emerges. D-6 Asc 16Sc37 is exactly squared by

transiting D-6 Pluto(transiting planets also project varga positions)

16Aq15 on January 17. It moves to about 17Aq00 at the same time transiting

Mars conjuncts the navamsha lagna, on the 23rd. Perhaps more important,

however, is the situation of D-6 lagnesh Mars. In the varga chart, it

falls in the 7th house at 14Ta44 -- closely aspecting the lagna, which it

rules. This very strong Mars is now pushed into the limelight by virtue of

Saturn's transit presently exactly conjunct at 14Ta34. Also, that Uranus

ingress that was part of the discussion of the stock market crash also

reappears here since both natal D-6 Rahu 00Sc24 and D-6 Pluto 00Aq39 will

be squared by Uranus as soon as it enters Aquarius. Perhaps Uranus is

already casting its square across the sign boundaries as it were, and its

impact will be felt before the ingress. All of this makes me consider

again that hostilities might break out at this time.

Finally, using Nadi directions, the war thesis is given yet another boost.

Using 2.5*/yr directions and advancing all points in the chart in the same

amount, Mars is front and centre. Natal MC 21Cp24 is directed to 7Ge38.

This is exactly conjunct that 2nd house Mars 7Ge33. Directed natal Saturn

(with Pluto in its back pocket) advances to 6Sg38, just one degree shy of

an opposition to natal Mars 7Ge38. Finally directed Mars 23Li37 is just

past squaring natal Venus 22Cn39, the ruler of the 1st and the 6th house.

In a sense, much of this analysis turns on how to interpret the activation

of the 2nd house. Is this a pure and simple affliction of 2nd house

matters like wealth or should we also pay extra attention to the

significations of the planets contained there, namely, Mars and Uranus,

planets that together paint a picture of sudden and violent injury? It's

very possible that both energies will be released at this time, and I would

take the Mars energy very seriously here. Richard Houck often wrote about

the notion that hits to one planet would "invoke" the energy of another if

the second planet was connected to the first by aspect or conjunction.

Certainly, these hits to Uranus in the 2nd can readily be seen as invoking

the energy of Mars, a planet which is only 5 degrees away by conjunction.

So those progressed hits to Uranus and the 2nd cusp contain the flavour of

hitting Mars itself. Thus, that transit of Rahu to the 2nd cusp should

also be seen in that light. And those progressed hits to natal Rahu have

to include some sense of what its dispositor Venus represents through the

houses it rules, namely, lagnesh (the country as a whole) and the 6th house

of enemies and conflict. That Venus is closely conjunct such difficult

planets as Saturn and Pluto suggests that India's enemies will be active

against it and that it will suffer very much as a result of conflict.

Another facet of this very complex configuration is how the disruption and

a possible attack might be linked. One might well jump to the conclusion

that an attack on India by Pakistan (or vice versa) may spark a stock

market panic in the rest of world. I can't imagine an attack severe enough

to cause this level of fear short of nuclear weapons, but it is certainly

possible. Let us hope and pray that all of this 2nd house affliction is

related to purely 2nd house affairs like a loss of wealth rather than to

the bloody portfolio of its tenant Mars!

So that's all for now. As always, comments welcome.

Chris
