Guest guest
Re: the previous thread from Rick, "We in fact do not know if reincarnation is happening, and if it is, how it is, or even if it follows a pattern. We in fact know nothing at all about this subject, but we have lots of inference and built up belief systems around it." As we know, there are references to reincarnation in the _Upanishads_, the _Puranas_, the _Bhagavad-Gita_, both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, and in the Buddha's teachings. Countless other enlightened sages whom some of us trust to be "in the know" have told us that reincarnation "is happening." Contemporary travelers of the inner realms, like Robert Monroe and William Buhlman, along with slews of ordinary people recounting near- death experiences, have also shared direct experiences that seem to confirm reincarnation. This is about all we have to go on in our present unawakened state of being. P.D. Ouspensky wrote in _The Fourth Way_ that "If you think you can be convinced [about theories of reincarnation], it will just be belief...And we cannot have evidence because of our state of consciousness...Only essence can remember [past lives], and since in ordinary man essence is unorganized and not separated from personality, we do not remember." Meanwhile, I choose to trust what the awakened masters tell me, maintaining a posture of faith, all the while seeking inner liberation and the direct experience of truth that will allow me to transcend the need for "belief." Guest guest
Reincarnation - a big topic in eastern philosophy. I agree with Rick that we can not 'know' if it is happening. In this context - I think he means 'know' like to see or experience. Normally we cannot - there are some exceptions like people who under hypnosis claim things that seem true etc. But, those are exceptions (like persons with physical or mental exceptions etc.). The beauty of nature is that it specializes in exceptions also. Anyway, normally we cannot know. The real question is reincarnation of what? Clearly, not of the body, or the brain, or even the mind. So, the question is what is reincarnated. If it is reincarnated, then I should be seeing (knowing) it right now because it should be here. So the real question becomes - what is here that will be reincarnated. The question comes down to what is the soul? That is where all religions begin. That of course is the holy grail. Whatever our understanding of the soul - the belief of reincarnation will be tied to it. So its a big big topic. Personally, in my understanding the question of reincarnation is best explained by the story of the 18th elephant (from veda). If you ask a wrong question, and insist on an answer, then you will be given a wrong answer. I understand what Gaudapada Karika says on this matter. Those are my 2 cents. Regards Meghna.
