Guest guest
DEAR LIST I would like to post about aspects which in vedic astrology are known as dristi. Those used to western astrology are well used to the term aspects like the trines, squares, quinconx etc. In vedic astrology we also have aspects but they have been translated into english to facilitate the western understanding of it. I am not an expert on Sanskrit and please correct me if i am wrong. But i try to get the meaning of the words. In Sanskrit, dristi has been translated into aspect. In the Bhagavad Gita we find: drstva -- after seeing or looking upon and drstim -- vision. Those words are related to dristi, to see. So, we understand that dristi is related to vision. How is that?, we are used to understand according to our knowledge and the work of our senses. When i tell a friend that some ants CAN spit water, friends have the tendency to reply "ants CANNOT do that" we have never seeing an ant doing that. My answer to them is that yes, i have seeing them on a TV documental. They have shown that in the Amazon forest, there are certain ants that can spit small amounts of water to small fires. They showed an army of those ants "spitting water" at a very small fire. It was not a computer animated programe or an staged acting tv programe to deceive people like the Osama TV tapes. It was an educative TV programe to show that there are ants capable of doing that. But we almost all (there can be exceptions) are used to respond according to our awareness. If we have not been exposed to a certain material or psychic phenomenon, it does not exist. Back to the vision business. We are used to "see" with our eyes, to "touch" with our skin, to "taste" with our tongue, to "smell" with our nose, to "listen" with our ears, to "think"with our mind and to discriminate between good and bad or to chose with our intellect. Now that i am "recovering" from this illness, i have become "allergic" to flourecent lights and "fire works". I can tell you that by experience. I am not kidding it is happening. I have heard as well about "strobing lights" causing epilepsy in some sensitive people, but so far i have not seeing those lights to tell you about their effect on me. The symptoms of that allergy are like the ones shown by "superman" when he is exposed to kriptonite. Or, feeling very tired, dizzy and sick. After being exposed to them, i cannot walk on an straight line because i walk as if being very drunk (ah my student days 30 + years ago). So, i thought that if we humans are affected through the vision, there must be room to invent a machine to measure that "aspect". But so far we do not have that machine and many will say "it is a figment of your imagination". How many times we have "responded" to the "feeling" that "someone has been looking at me". We may not have the evidence but we have felt at some point the power of the sight on us. Especially ladies that are more sensitive in general than men. So we go to aspects. Aspects of trines in westen astrology mean 30° "separation" between A and B. It can be a planet to planet or planet to a certain point like the ascendant. Square is = 90°, and so forth. In vedic astrology, 3 houses aspect means 60°, 4 houses aspect = 90°, 5 = 120°, 7th is the opposition or 180° etc. This means that we count as 1 from the aspecting planet's location. Or we multiply by 30° for every house indicated and take away 30 to get the result. Every planet "aspect" or "see" the house where that planet is posited, located or ubicated. All the "grahas" (centers of energy but translated as planets), "see" or "aspect" the opposite house and whatever planet is in the sign in which they are a guest, except Ketu, which has not vision on the opposition and only on the "tenanted" sign or house and the planets therein. Below you will see the dristi of the planets according to vedic astrology. Sun 1/7 Moon 1/7 Mars 1/7/4/8 Mercury 1/7 Jupiter 1/7/5/9 Venus 1/7 Saturn 1/7/3/10 Rahu 1/7/5/12 Ketu 1 Notice that Rahu has the same aspects like those of Jupiter, plus the 12th house aspect. Some astrologers have the opinion that 12th has to be counted like for the other planets (forwards like the signs of the zodiac) and other astrologers have the opinion that it should be counted backwards, because Rahu is always backwards. In this way, the 12th house aspect from Rahu will be either the 2nd or the 12th from his position. It is a matter of opinion. I follow the 12th house aspect from Rahu as his position on the chart. I think that because Rahu is always backwards, is always aspecting the sign that he is going to move next. For ej. now Rahu is in Gemini and next he will move into Taurus because of his "retrograde" or "backwards" movement. To me, Rahu is already aspecting Taurus with his 12th house aspect. In vedic philosophy, association is very important. In English there is a saying "tell me with which friends you mix and i will tell you who you are" or "Dime con quien andas y te dire quien eres" but you can translate to your own tongue, you know it. So, by association we can go up or down, wherever that is depends in taste, culture, choice or guna. So in vedic astrology, association of the planets is also important. For ej. Venus associated with a "benefic" Jupiter (without debilitation or in a good house) can "absorb" good vibrations and show them in his periods or transits (More about this later). But if Venus is associated with a "malefic" like Rahu, Venus will show "bad" effects. Here i have to say that Rahu has as well good enrgies to share with Venus but that is another matter. i have to say that every planet can be bad, good or neutral. Just like association is important, dristi or aspect is also very important. Every dristi is like association although in a secondary way. Please remind me to post about the importance of dristis in gocharas, in case i forget. I just post this for you to be able to digest. Any questions are welcome. In vedic astrology, when we calculate Graha Bala of planets, (Shad Bala of Planets) aspect of Rahu and Ketu are not taken into consideration. Here all planets are aspecting all other planets. When the Drishti Range is 0-30 degree they do not aspect and the Drishti Range is above 300 degress they do not aspect. When analysing the natal chart, practically, different astrologers do consider the aspect of Rahu and Ketu in their own understanding of classics. regards, C.S.
