Dear Patrice

<<Can someone please shed light on the meaning of the term 'Janma Lagna or Janma

Rashi'? >>

The way i see it, it is like this:

janma = birth

lagna = rising sign

rashi = sign of birth or the natal vedic horoscope. In vedic astrology the moon

sign is the most important when compared to western astrology which takes the

sun sign as the most important.

In general, we have 2 graphics or charts to represent our natal horoscope. The

graphic on the left represents the rashi chart or the natal horoscope and the

grasphic on the right hand side usually represents the navamsa chart (a

suplementary chart) but it

can be as well any of the other suplementary charts like the saptamsa, dasamsa, dwasasamsa etc.

So janma lagna is the rising sign of a chart or the "head" of the chart.

The 12 signs of the zodiac are "rotatingaround" the earth once every 24

hours. If we look at night (during the day time we can not see the stars) to

the eastern horizon, and if we know how to read the stars, we can see that a

sign of the zodiac is "rising" at an specific time. 2 hours later

(aproximately), another sign will rise and in this way during the sky night,

the signs of the zodiac will follow each other from rising time to sunset time,

until they disappear to our eyes below the western horizon.

According to the birth time of a person, project, enterprise, travel, question

etc. determines the rising sign for that especific time.

So we get the janma rasi which is represented in a chart as the 1st astrological house.

If you are following the north Indian style of charts, the lagna or rising sign

or the 1st house is represented by the top middle sector above the inside of

the graphic. And the 2nd house will be represented by the next sign of the

zodiac or sector by going in an anti-clock-wise direction. The 3rd house will

be the next sign, then fourth, fifth and until you read the 12th house which is

represented by the sign before the lagna sign and by the sector on the right

hand side of the lagna sector, which is represented by an inverted triangle

above the inside of the graphic or divided square.

If you are following the south Indian style of graphics, then you write an L for

lagna on the sector representing the lagna sign. The 2nd house is found by

following the signs in a clock-wise direction. In this way, the 12th house

will be the sign before the lagna sign.

The janma rashi is the moon sign, either Aries, Taurus etc. So, all the planets

in the horoscope are called natal planets and they are represented on their

respective signs according to the calculations.

An advanced vedic astrologer may follow or "read" the lagna chart from birth to

the 32nd birthday. The chandra lagna chart from between the 32 and 64 birthday

and the surya (Sun lagna) from between 64 and 96 years old.

The lagna chart or basic natal horoscope indicates mainly the physical trends.

The chandra lagna (or the moon sign) indicates the mental trends. And the

surya lagna indicates the spiritual or egoistic trends.

>From birth and upto 32, in general, we are more concern about our physical

outlook. between 32 and 64, our mental outlook becomes more important although

some people continues the physical concern, the i am this body.

Decartes said "I think, therefore I am" but that was his realization, the mental

platform. I am sure that in his next reincarnation Decartes is going to advance

his conception or awareness.

After the 64 birthday when the autumn of life sets in, the person usually

becomes more concerned about spiritual values and prepares his ego for the

departure of his soul to the next stage of life. We can read these trends from

the surya lagna.

How to find the janma lagna, chandra lagna or surya lagna?

The janma lagna is the head or natal rising sign found by the birth time and it

is represented by the 1st house in the chart. So, the janma rasi becomes the

"head" of the chart.

The janma rashi or the chandra (moon) lagna is the moon sign of a chart as the

head of the chart. For more confort in a reading, the moon sign is represented

as the lagna from where we can find the head of the chart or its first house

etc. The surya lagna is when we represent the sun sign as the lagna.

Remember that from lagna we have 1st house, 2nd, 3rd...and all the way upto the

12th house. From janma rashi or the moon sign we also get 1st, 2nd ans 12th

house.

The same procedure we follow for the surya lagna or surya sign.

In fact we can do the same operation for the planet ruling the present main

period or dasa. Suppose that you are in the Jupiter dasa or main period.

Then, you can represent a graphic with your Jupiter sign as lagna and from

there you can see all the houses. In this way very easily you will see that

the 7th house from Jupiter lagna is the opposite sign to the Jupiter sign etc.

The GJ has a function which allows at the touch of a buttton to represent any of

the 12 signs of the zodiac as a lagna. This function is very practical cos

allow us to see the "head" from any point that we chose.

I hope that these lines are helpful, otherwise ask again and i will try to

explain from a different perspective until you get the idea.

Best wishes

Dear Natabara,

Thank you so much for your thorough explanation of Janma Lagna. Very helpful. I

had not seen Chandra Lagna/Chandra Rasi referred to as Janma before. Just

hadn't seen the word 'Janma'. I found some helpful explanations in BHPS but not

a definition exactly of Janma and wanted to clarify it completely. You have

certainly done that. Thank you so much.

It is always so great to see you writing on here again.

Kindest regards,

Patrice
