Dear Dave,

At 01:38 PM 11/2/01 -0500, you wrote:

Robert, I read the

two articles Sanjay wrote on vimsottari dasa, and am still a little

confused about stength evaluation for various starting points. My janma

nakshatra is ashwini, lagna is uttara bhadrapada, kshema is rohini, utpanna

is mrigashira, adhana is pushya. Two planets are kendra from lagna, five

from the moon,six from adhana,zero from kshema,zero from utpanna.This

would seem to suggest that for your rule, I should use the moon degees

into pushya as a starting point, which if I do does give an intriguing

dasa sequence, but from Sanjay's article it does appear that while he

would use multiple dasa starting points for identifying patterns of

convergence, but he does not specifically suggest adhana as an alternative

for natal horoscope, but only moon, lagna, and utpanna( in addition to

ashtottari if indicated). Is no consideration given to aspects to the moon

and lagna? Thanks, Dave

Thanks for your question. The rules that I gave previously

for calculating dasas from alternative starting points, are a little

incomplete. Let give the complete set of starting points, as

well as rules for deciding the better one to use, as follows:

.. In chapter 18, verses 33 to 35, of the Jataka Parijata

the following unique conditions upon which the Vimsottari dasa should

be calculated, are given:

Calculate dasas from the strongest of the following:

· The

rising star, or lagna naksatra at the time of birth

· The

janma naksatra, or the star in which the Moon is placed at birth;

· The

star in which the Moon is placed at the time of a query (for timing the

results of a Prashna chart); and

· The

naksatra corresponding to the first syllable of the given name of the

child.

It is also recommended, that the Vimsottari dasa can be calculated from

the following naksatras:

· The

Utpanna naksatra, or the star 5th in order from the janma

naksatra;

· The

Kshema naksatra, or the one 4th in order from the janma;

· Or,

the Adhana naksatra, the one in the 8th from the janma

naksatra.

Since the dasas calculated from the 4th and 8th naksatras are really

meant as Ayur dasas, or dasas for longevity determinations,

we can safely rely on the use of the Utpanna naksatra as a

possible starting point for calculations for all other life events.

To determine the stronger of naksatras as starting points, first find the

sign and house in which each naksatra sits. Then, find the

sign/house, which has more planets in angles to it. If the number

of planets in angles to each naksatra is the same, then see which angles

have planets in own or exaltation signs. If a tie still exists,

then see which angles are aspected by more out of their own lords,

Jupiter, and Mercury. If still uncertainty exists, it is best to

use the Moon’s naksatra position as the initiating point of the

Vimsottari dasas.

So yes, Sanjay has pointed out, that for purposes of Phalita dasa, the

lagna, Moon, or Utpanna naksatras may be used; the Kshema or Adhana

naksatras may be used in case matters related to longevity are

needed.

Best wishes,

Robert
