Guest guest
Hi Andrew, I also wonder about the correct formula, the way I calculated it seems very tedious, but anyways, this is how I did it, maybe it'll refresh your memory and you could post an easier way. First I made 4 lists, each list standing for fire, earth, air and water signs and numbered the lists 1 through 30. For the fire list, next to 1 is 9 Aries, next to 2 is 18 Aries, next to 3 is 27 Aries, next to 4 is 6 Taurus, etc...continuing the sequence in multiples of 9 ending in Sagittarius. I did the same for the other lists, starting with the moveable sign of the element for each one, and ending with their mutables....Earth would start with 1 at 9 Cap, Air would start at 9 Libra, Water at 9 Cancer.............this next part I can only explain by example, I hope it's clear enough Ex ~> 7:33 Sag I ignore the degree and take 33 divided by 60, multiplied then by 9. It comes to 4.95. Now I use the degree only and look on the fire list and next to 7 is 3 Gemini. I add 4.95 to 3 Gemini, it's 7.95, then I convert the decimal to degrees, .95 multiplied by 60 is 57, so the navamsa degree is 7:57 Gemini. Do share if there's an easier way, but I hope it helped Angie ~`Can one of the more mathematically minded put up the maths for doing it so I can re-remember it!`~
Guest guest
Hi Angie, One doesn't need to calculate at all using simple tables. I made my own set of tables back in the 80's before I dreamed of having a computer. I have them in an exercise book (a bit worse for wear), but I still find them useful at times when the computer is not functioning for some reason. I can't send an attachment with eGroup but I can scan the pages and send them to you off the list if you like. Guest guest
For navmasha count by 3 degree 20 minutes. Find out in which navmasha a planet is i.e 0 to 3 degree 20 minute 1st 3 degree 20 minute to 6 degree 40 2nd 6.40 (40 is minutes and consider same in all the notions) to 10.00 is 3rd 10.00 to 13.20 is 5th 13.20 to 16.40 is 6th and so on. 1st navmasha is the same sign if the natal sign in rashi chart is movable. 5th navmasha is same if the sign is fixed. 9th is same if sign is dual. suppose sun is in aries 13 degree. Counting on my fingers i will get 3.20,6.40,10.00, 13.20 it is in 4rth navmasha. as 1st is the same sign, i will begin counting from 1 so 4rth sign cancer is the navmaha sign of sun Let it be in Tauras 13.00 5th is the Tauras navmasha , counting in reverse it is in aries. Let it be in Gemini 13.00 9th is the gemini navmasha deducting 8 from this (3+12-8) = 7 1st navmasha in gemini will be of libra so 4rh from libra is capricorn. In this case sun is in capricorn navmasha. Practise it on your fingers. Guest guest
Well said Inder Jit, Navamsha can indeed be worked manually and very quickly. In moveable signs, the counting of navamshas begin from the sign itself, in dual signs, the counting of navamshas begin from 5th sign from the dual sign, where the planet is placed and in fixed signs, the counting is done from the 9th sign, the planet is placed in. We dont keep tables. Its very simple exercise, as Inderjit explained and can be done manually. best regards, Manoj >"Inder Jit Sahni" <isawhney_21 >gjlist ><gjlist> >Re: [gjlist] navamsa degrees >Mon, 11 Jun 2001 15:33:43 +0530 > >For navmasha count by 3 degree 20 minutes. Guest guest
Om Krsnaaya Namah Hello Angie and Andrew, > > Do share if there's an easier way, but I hope it helped Angie > The simplest way is to convert whatever longitude you want to find, to it's position out of 360*. Multiply by 9. Convert back to signs and degrees. So say we want to find the navamsa degree of something at 2* Taurus. This is 32*. 32 x 9 = 288 = 18* Capricorn. (BTW, if you get more than 360 after the multiplication, just subtract 360). Hope it helps, Pursottam _______ Get your free @ address at
Guest guest
Hi, thank you all for the shortcuts, that makes so much more sense About the navamsas, I remember reading an article a little while ago about a planet being in such`n`such navamsa, like 3rd navamsa, and I had absolutely no idea where they got that from, so thanks, now that you explain it I can understand that part much better too And thank you Wendy for offering to send me your tables, that's really nice of you and I'm sure they're really helpful tables but I think it might be better if I get used to doing it in my head, thanks though Angie

Hi!, If you can open the attached file(s) you´ll get a table showing the degrees of the nakshatras and below that the navamsa division 1 to 12. Aries is 1, Taurus is 2.....Pisces is 12. So if you know the degrees and minutes of a planet, just take the number under that nakshatra pada to get the navamsa. I have attached two versions for I don´t know which gets thru undistorted. PLEASE tell me which you can open and read. If both fail, PLEASE tell me which format is good for sending scanned material. Thaks. regards Mani
