In general, brain stuff is said to take two weeks to start having effects. I

think GLA may be different as I felt it immediately, like within a couple

minutes of first consumption. I think this may be due to that it possibly

triggers digestive effects which trigger dompamine production or something.

I'm not a dietician scientist.

I do know Paxil took a week, Effexor a couple days, and this a couple

minutes. That's been my experience.

In general, brain takes awhile to absorb stuff, true, but I think this area

of knowledge is subtle and growing, so complex, each case different.

I don't think migraines were listed under Dopamine's turf, so I don't know if

GLA will help or not. Kinda doubt, but we'll see, harmless testing it on

yourself, it's just food. Fatty food.

Take care all,

Raghu

Om Amrtesvaryai Namah!

Namaste dear sisters and brothers!!

well, Dasji did such a great sell job on that yellow oil he is

consuming...and he seems to have improved so much in how he feels,

that i was encouraged too, to try this out...and i did find the borage

oil variety, with several different fatty acids, all combined

together...so it's experiment time again!!!

will let you know if any change is noticed....Dasji was amazing in the

change it wrought in him, however, i haven't been quite that depressed

that i was needing the SRI's (at least i haven't felt the need to go

there...not so desperate)...so perhaps any improvement wouldn't be

quite so noticeable, but hey, it's worth a try....let's see how it

affects the Migraines too...they are claimed to be related to low

serotonin levels, but when i have take for example 5HTP to try and

address this i found that IT could give me a headache too...and that

is at around the suggested dosage....so who knows???it could be just

the same as it was for Dasji....still a big mystery, and usually

somewhat misdiagnosed...

i'm kind of "interested" to see what if any results will occur...

So thanks Dasji, for sharing and baring and letting us, your list

friends, and family into your life a bit...i am honoured and i found

that it actually increased my regard for you my dear brother...that

you are willing to let it all hang out there...Many people wouldn't be

that brave...but then you are not many people....you are you and you

can be VERY brave...just to go the HK route that you took required a

lot of bravery...as it is a difficult path to follow in this western

society...(any spiritual path is a difficult pursuit in this

materialistic world...we are NOT encouraged by outside influences to

go there...)

Dear Visvanathan and list,

I just want to mention something you may, and probably already are, aware of

Visvanathan. But in case not: Apparently for migraines, from what I have

studied about this in the past, in looking for best results, one is to use

on a continual basis for awhile rather than expecting immediate effects.

It's not necessarily a quick fix, like a pill or Excedrin kind of cure, but

rather some beneficial effects over migraines with use over time.

Other positive effects could be immediately, such as Das is having. Hooray!

Namaste,

Patrice

Hello,

In many herb and alternative healing books, evening primrose oil is listed

to help migraines. (And it did help my migraines which were actually caused

from caffeine. Discontinuation of caffeine completely ended my own

migraines, but I did continue with primrose oil for all its other great

benefits.)

In 'Healthy Healing', a general all purpose book as a guide to self healing,

and often used as a reference in health stores, along with 'Prescription for

Nutritional Healing', evening primrose oil is suggested for migraines to

help with prostaglandin balance, along with royal jelly.

Here's a bit of info from Healthy Healing:

Prostaglandins are a vital group of hormone-like substances derived from

essential fatty acids that regulate body functions electrically. EFA's

control reproduction and fertility, inflammation, immunity and communication

between cells. Prostaglandins balance the body's essential fatty acid

supply. Foods like ocean fish, sea foods, olive and sunflower oils, and

herbs like evening primrose and flax oils all affect prostaglandic balance.

Conversely, excess saturated fats in the body, especially from fatty animal

foods, inhibit both prostaglandin production and proper hormone flow. EFA's

also promote the prostaglandins that decrease inflammation.

Actually one of my real favorite educational herb books, "Asian Health

Secrets," by Letha Hadady, has evening primrose oil under "Is there an

aspirin alternative?" She writes: Many herbs are excellent, safe

anti-inflammatories. For example, capsules of evening primrose oil also

prevent inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandins, but without side effects.

And she continues further: Evening primrose oil has been recommended for the

prevention of migraines, arthritis, menstrual pain, PMS, acne, and weight

loss. It helps clear toxins as well as treat pain.

In my studies, I have seen it often mentioned in many texts as helping with

the liver, so again the reference to clearing toxins, which in turn can help

with migraines.

It's great stuff all around, definitely. I hope this helps.

Om Amrtesvaryai Namah!!

Namaste Patrice!

thank you for the extra information...this is a reasonable

expectation...that it will take a while to balance out the chemistry

of the body...i wouldn't necessarily expect ANY results

immediately...as i said, i am not feeling to be in such desperate

straits as my dear brother Dasji was...so it may not make such a

difference....immediately...but it may have a beneficial effect over

time and for example over the winter, when the darkness is trying to

the soul...it's an experiment for me...and i would carry it out for

at least a couple or three months...

What i learned from the article in Discover re dopamine receptors and

obese or addicted people...is that they have LESS receptors in their

brains...and thus the ordinary pleasures like a sunset or a walk in

the lovely woods...will not give them the same feeling of joy and

pleasure...so they seek the dopamine by self-medicating with food or

drugs...as Dasji was sharing with us....

what they also STRESSED in that little article was that EXERCISE is a

very good treatment for these dopamine receptors...NOT ONLY DOES IT

CAUSE THE BODY TO RELEASE MORE DOPAMINE, BUT IT ACTUALLY BUILDS MORE

DOPAMINE RECEPTORS IN THE BRAIN!!!!

Thus the person suffering from this disorder can help themselves

enormously by getting some exercise...i've noticed that exercise

affects migraines too...if i don't get enough exercise, definitely

migraines increase...so this might also be related to the whole

dopamine business...i do remember reading a long time ago how the

exercise nuts get "high" on exercise....because the exercise causes

the body to release Endorphins...but i didn't know about

Dopamine...and in fact i still don't know whether Dopamine is

considered to BE an Endorphin...haven't checked that out.

But EXERCISE is good for all aspects of the body...including mood and

heart health as well...so i'm an advocate of that...even if it's just

MORE walking and LESS driving...more stairs, less elevators...going

for a nice walk every day in a place where one enjoys to be...a park

or in my case down by the river along abandoned rail road tracks which

have had the ties and rails removed and a trail made...it's also

considered good to get some exercise which is making you sweat a

little...like going uphill for a while...even very steeply...or even

up stairs...perhaps you might even put a weight on...i have noticed

from walking to work up hill for 15-20 mins/day for 4 days a week,

that after not so long it became a lot easier...and that's with a

weighted down pack...so i'm a strong advocate of walking as much as

possible...that's what we are designed for....NOT sitting on an office

chair in front of a computer all day!!! (although i've been known to

do just this myself....only to rush out for a walk just before

sunset...)and i notice when i DON'T manage to do that...i just don't

feel as good.

Dear Visvanathan, Das, and list,

Great info on exercising and the chemical effects on the body. Thank you for

all your words and info, and insights, good thoughts. Physical, spiritual,

and mental health - important to have the whole health and energy to pursue

these great gifts of Jyotish and truths we have available, and to be healthy

with energy so as to offer our own gifts and love to others. Thanks for all

your words and encouragement to look at these issues and also encouragement

to be out in nature and walking, exercising. Important to include in the

midst of all our studies.

Namaste,

Patrice

Many, many long days on the computer...too little sunshine, too little

exercise, modern day (over-processed) diet.........

Have just got back from store armed with huge bottle of "Evening Primrose

Oil" :-)

....have sneaking suspicion it may be beneficial for inflammatory disease.

Regards

Wendy

PS: I agree with what you say Visvanathan regarding exercise, etc...although

the "high" that you spoke of (endorphin) is usually common to marathon

runners and not something one usually experiences with normal exercise. I

also don't believe people can get "high" on cigarettes as tobacco is not a

mind-altering drug...certainly an unhealthy habit, but not an intoxicant as

such.
