You are welcome, and yes, the idea you have presented above would be an

ideal research model to show the interconnections of different dasas, vis a

vis known life events. You know, its all a matter of time. But the idea

is good - to put together a logical thesis on which dasas should operate

versus which events, and show the results of the research in the form of a

book. I am currently working on two books, neither one of which is near

completion yet, but your idea above sounds like a good third one.

Vimsottari dasa is widely used, yet the sages, particularly Parasara and

Jaimini, present use of particular dasas, for particular purposes. For

example, there is Shoola dasa to time disease and death; there is Drig dasa

to time spiritual events; there is Sudasa, to time periods of

prosperity. How to calculate these is presented in the various books, yet

the research on them is yet to be done. Since already we see that such

dasas work, its just a matter of time and effort to put the studies down in

writing.

Thanks for your energy and input!

Best wishes,

Robert

The above dasa systems are taught in the Parasara Hora shastra, as well as

in the Jaimini Sutram. There is also an on-line Jyotish college,

head-mastered by Pt. Sanjay Rath, wherein the practical uses of these dasas

systems is taught. Please go on-line to http://www.sjvc.org. for

information. This is the web site of Sri Jagannatha Vedic Center, where

you can register and study in depth.

Many astrologers used multiple dasa systems, in addition to the popular

Vimsottari. There are dasas requiring specific conditions that are given,

and there are dasas used for specific purposes. Simply using Vimsottari

alone, only scratches the surface so far as the world of predictive

techniques taught by Parasara and other sages. Shoola dasa, for example,

and Navamsa dasa, are meant to be applied only when there are longevity

determinations. There are others that can be learned, such as Padakrama

dasa (Narayana dasa), and Lagna Kendradi Rasi dasa, which apply in general

matters, and they are very accurate. So if you have the energy and

enthusiasm, I would recommend learning the calculations, and application of

all such dasas, and they can be learned under Sri Sanjay Rath and Jagannath

Vedic Center.

Also, you can read the following books which describe the uses of these

dasas, both by Sanjay Rath:

1. Maharshi Jaimini Upadesa Sutras;

2. Crux of Vedic Astrology, Timing of Events

You can get these easily and quickly at the following:

Best wishes,

Robert

Dear Robert,

Glad you don´t find my idea stupid! Actually there is another hole to fill:

I have a lot of books which I got sent from India, by varahamihira etc. hoping

to be able to digest them But since my profession is not astrology, I never

found time to digest everything. I found that these were all aphorisms to learn

by heart, not really textbooks to teach - let alone self-teaching. A teacher had

to explain the aphorisms.

Now, to get to the subject in a modern way, one needs an index. If one had an

index and looked up all the verses under "marriage" or "education" one may get

somewhere. But the savants who laboriously translated the works never thought of

providing any indices for reference. Some do not even have a detailed table of

contents, only say wchich chapter begins on which page!

As is usual with most textbooks, the given examples are too simple, the ones

which really need explanation are not dealt with. ... "If a malefic occupies the

5th ...etc. " ... but what is malefic? With my taurus Ac, jupiter becomes a

malefic. Is jupiter meant, or a natural malefic like saturn? Now saturn is

yogakaraka and jupiter my atmakaraka! So where do I stand?

The problem is that all the books were written, later translated and commented

FOR ASTROLOGERS! NOT BEGINNERS!

In the university I had a big problem learning calculus. My teacher was

over-qualified and useless, spoke over our heads. The recommended textbooks

were just as bad. Then I found a book called the "Fool´s Caculus". The author

started by saying, "I am a fool, but have learnt calculus. What one fool can do,

another can too!" This book was full of humour, but dealt with the problems a

learner would have wonderfully - and I learned calculus!

That is what is needed. People like Frawley, Houck and Levacy have started this

method, but the reference books have to be revised to suit and support.

regards

Mani
