Guest guest
Hi all, Thanks for answers re karakas. ....... There was a Hungarian in London, who prided himself on having learnt English perfectly. His accent was British, his idiom too: he said "It´s me!", not "It´s I" as grammar would have insisted. After finding that Burleigh was pronounced Burly, he went on to learn that Chalmondeley was Chumly, Beauchamp was Beecham, Featherstonehaugh was Fanshaw, Marjoriebanks was Marshbanks, Leicester was Lesrer, Gloucester was Gloster, Cirencester was however Cyrencester, Greenwich was Greenich, James was James, but Thames was Tems. He had just signed up for a course in Welsh-arithmetic: to learn to count the "w"s, "c"s, "L"s and "m"s to decippher how to pronounce the various names and words in Welsh, which seemed to get by without the other 22 letters of thelphabet, except the occasional y or e. Then came the day he opened cultural pages of the London Times and read the headline: HAMLET PRONOUNCED SUCCESS!... He went home and shot himself! Before my confusion gets worse confounded, I had better get back to philosophy and accept the Great Mother as karaka for everything!!! regards Mani
