Guest guest Posted April 9, 2001 Report Share Posted April 9, 2001 My son is a good artist at 16. He recently sculpted a large coffee mug type of piece, with a lizard wrapped around the mug. All in clay, nicely glazed, a fine piece, worth a good price. It was put into the unlocked art display case at his (very large) high school here in Eugene. One night it and some other pieces were stolen. This was my sons priced piece of work for the year. He's a determined, attached, focused young man. He wanted that mug, but now it was gone. Naturally the normal pleas for the thief to return the goods went out. Some weeks passed. One night, the thief returned the mug, placing it on the wide and sturdy ledge in front of the front door of our house. It would have been fine there until we found it after the nightime visit of the thief, but they obviously couldn't know that our cat walks along that ledge often, and likes to rub itself against any object along that walkway, and so, rubbed the cup right off the 4 foot high ledge, and kaboom, crash went the fragile piece of china like pottery on the ground outside in the middle of the night, before we could even receive the thief's gift back into our lives. It was never meant to come back to Eke. Now matter how hard anybody tried. It didn't care about Eke's free willing that it would return, or my free willing that Eke wouldn't suffer, or even the thiefs excellent free willing to undo the wrong deed.
