Guest guest
Dear Natabara, I deserve some flak concerning my comments. I know they appear flippant and judgemental. But cursory appraisal has to start somewhere, and I am trying to get to the core of a persons' motivation. Actual diagnosis and treatment is largely secondary. (Consider the observations 'groundwork in tandem') Actually, chronic insanity is not that common.(and Mad is not necessarily Bad!). We are told Mental Illness will affect one in Five people sometime during their life. I would suggest the figures are much higher (and rising!). These days, medications without the intolerable side effects, are freely available. If sufferers maintain thier medication regime and coping stratagies, the condition can be successfully managed, enabling a normal life. This applies to the most serious and common disorders,ie: Bi-polar disorder, schitzophrenia and severe depression. Now what happens?....compliance of medication orders have to be legally upheld in a large percentage of long term cases, for a variety of reasons, all involving ego to some degree. Relapse is common, usually due to deliberate or subconscious pursuit of the 'high' of mania or psychosis. (thats where I come in!). Unfair in the extreme, but I will throw my hat in the ring and declare Van Gogh so sad&bad he sent himself mad, and poor old Nietzche, just plain sad!!. Having said that, I ought to look at their charts!. Peace, Ann.
Guest guest
Dear An, Natabara, "Unfair in the extreme, but I will throw my hat in the ring and declare Van Gogh so sad&bad he sent himself mad, and poor old Nietzche, just plain sad!!. Having said that, I ought to look at their charts!." That's a good idea. Van Gogh, whom I admire, has an extremely unbalanced chart- /Cancer, trop. rising, Moon in Sag- Natabara said he died in Moon's dasha, so I guess Cancer is his his Lagna, too/-(I use present time, since the horoscope "works" after physical death, as we all know). For better understanding I will quote a piece of his letter, sent to his brother Teo, who supported him and his passion for art, since poor genius was able to sell his work for just $20, during his VERY PRODUCTIVE short life: "....that yellow ...that I created this summer is so amazing that only insane person could produce it......I think that I will gladly accept that role...'(of being mad, for the sake of HIS ART)- sacrifice? Seems so- I feel that he had a mission (as I guess we all do) that he had fulfilled- he gave us so much, he couldn't have done more! It's my feeling that we all have enough time to fulfill our "major mission" in life- no matter how long life is, no matter whether we know (as Van Gogh DID) what that mission is or not. Comforting, indeed. Bad, sad, mad- we all try to make some classification (of course, most- all??- are wrong), to help our mind simplify the world, life, and feel as if we understand them- but Van Gaugh, Nietzche, you, me...we are all BEYOND that, IMHO. If I have to make a choice I would choose sad-mad, but. again he was SO HAPPY when he would produce a master-piece that he liked (in one day, quite often). Most mental illness is "sadness", but some owing to defective brain structure or function. I have never treated patients, but since I was 13 years old, I have been confronted or been in touch with various kinds of mental anomalies. M;edication does not always help, for the problem is psychotic. To give a crude example: a woman hates men because she was raped brutally as a child! The deed cannot be erased, nor the disgust, fear and physical suffering she experienced. Here only the highest philosophy can help to overcome the hate, to have a positive relationship with a male partner. But if the mental derangement has already taken hold, you cannot pour in the philosophy! The person is totally rejective, totally unreceptive!.... I am not speculating but talking of past experiences. Van Gogh´s paintings reveal that he saw the world in a rather weird way. A corn field or sunflowers are soothing to our eyes, but his representations of the same are somehow true, but somehow demonic. It is not a question of technique, like Renoir´s telling strokes, or the pointillistic depiction. Van Gogh´s paintings don´t show affection for the known, but a fear of the inevitably known, the evil that lurks behind the familiar - if one expects evil in everything! A mind like that has taken up a permasnent position, csn hardly be influenced! The pity is that such souls are shut off from happiness, joy, the momentary laugh and appreciation of the humour in life! regards Mani
