There were no supermarkets and meat was never packed. One went to a butcher. The carcasses were generally hung up in full sight in Europe even 30 years ago, and was cut up to suit the customer, except for a small selection of pre-cut pieces. The shops were clean and tolerable. But in India even today the shops in the market are unsanitary and stink to heaven. Meat hardly "tickles" the tongue. I learnt to eat it to survive at sea. It took me over a year to be able to swallow even one piece: I found it rubbery and an unpleasant in odour. Actually I started with a tiny piece every day, chewed it and finally spat it out in disgust. Exactly one year later I said to myself, "If you don´t swallow it today you will never succed!" and gulped it down. After that I could gradually increase the quantity. By then I had overcome my disgust for the odour. Actually meat is in itself almost tasteless. Whatever tickles the tongue is usually the sauce or spices that come with it. But the same eaten with potatoes or bread is equally satisfying to the tongue! Grilling does make meat "tastier", but grilled vegetables are better in taste. Children cultivate a taste for what mom cooks. I love bitter gourd because I learnt to like the taste at home. My children cannot eat it, for it was not available here till recently and was never served to them when they were young. I hasve a waxing moon in gemini (ardra) in the second. The second as such is not afflicted by any fiery planet, but gets a 5th house aspect from saturn in aquarius. Mercury, owner of second is debilitated in pisces, but is fully aspected by jupiter retro. in virgo. I guess the combination of moon in ardra (Rahu), with rahu in 9th and lagna lord venus with saturn lead me to "commit sinful acts"! regards Mani
Guest guest
I put this question to myself as well as to all of us. If tomorrow it was declared that the convenience of going to a store and picking up butchered packaged meat, would not longer be available, but in its place live animals would be offered with the instruments and instructions on how to kill and butcher them. How many of us would continue to eat meat? Think about it. Namaste, Jeff
Guest guest
Dear Mani, I really appreciate your way of thinking, and your love for a "thinking process" itself. Whether I agree or not with your opinion, it's always refreshing to read your posts. I grew up as a meat eater, and than taste of meat became awful to me (I think this is due to various treatment, by hormones, chemicals- I know that happens to veg as well, but, it doesn't make it bad smelling- just tasteless.. That's the reason I don't eat meat. In a way, I agree with you- if we look at the food chain, it seems, except for religious reasons, quite normal that humans are omnivore. So the chain goes. My son was a meat eater, and I didn't complain- then he came with the idea "that it maybe not ethical to eat meat", and stopped buying and eating meat. It was his decision. I came to that conclusion "post factum", after loosing appetite for meat. We all have different experiences, and right to make any decision, as long as our survival doesn't depend on that.. That makes me perhaps more accepting of meat-eater. But it's good to be reminded, that behind well packed piece of meat there is an animal killed. Vegetarianism became more widespread when due to "various treatments", abundance of food (however tasteless, odorless...) appear. Our grand-parents didn't mind buying food from a butcher- where signs of slaughter were obvious.. Hungry man would eat anything. That's in nature of things, I guess. But when choice is available, and health and other circumstances permit... Anna PS: It's still hard for me to resist row, well prepared "Tartar beefsteak"... Guest guest
Hello! Mani Meat eating under extraneous circumstances is justifiable. In this dark iron age of Kali every one is addicted to a few bad habits. I don't care who you are I could probably fine one indiscretion. Even President Clinton smoked a joint once. What to speak of the common man. This is merely a symptom of the age we live in & I won't hold it against you.
