Krishna Caitanyas Birth Data

Feb 27th 1486 16:48

Mayapur India 22:27N 88:8E using IST 5.5

You get moon and lagna at 19 degrees Leo.

About this data:

The verses in Caitanya Caritamrita about the birth of Sri Caitanya make

it clear that he was Leo Rising with the Moon there. They also make it

quite clear it was a night with an eclipsed Moon. They are also clear

that it was the full moon night in the month of Phalgun of 1486.

So, when you put all this together, you get the above data.

For verification, I used a listing from another government software

about eclipses, and found that indeed there was a lunar eclipsed that

night back then according to official lunation calculations.

It's quite true that on the full moon night of the month of phalgun in

1486 there was a lunar eclipsed.

So apparently that's the night Caitanya was born. Then, it says he was

born at Moonrise. That's a local event pertaining to the place of birth,

and it means moon conjunct lagna, and that is how I rectified the birth

time to this time.

The data in the Raman book is not correct, either by lagna or day.

The authors in the Gaudiya Math lineage, Bhaktivinoda, Bhaktisidhanta,

Bhaktivedanta, all deriving from Bhaktivinodes work on the matter, agree

with Simha lagna.

This puts Caitanya in Venus dasha at birth and Sun beginning around age 10.

If you follow the dashas in this way, and read through the life events

in CC, then you'll see good correspondence.

I once wrote a piece on the main life events of Caitanya and showed how

they went with his dashas. Don't know where that is right now.

But it does line up pretty amazingly well.

The key thing about the chart is that his moon was supposedly in eclipse

(ketu), full and rising. This is a pretty amazing moon. And in Leo...

and aspected by exalted Mars in the 6th!

So fiery would be putting it mildly.

Pitta is generally a requirement for an amazing life.

Dear Raghu,

You got me "bugged"! The date you give is the gregorian and I had a problem

locating the eclipse, thinking it was a Julian date. It is best to state which

date one means when talking of old charts.

Apparently the eclipse began - entering the penumbra, but still visible at about

19:00 hrs, became total at about an hour later. So the saint was born before the

eclipse, if lagna has to fall in leo. But how do you fix the time as 16:48? what

other criterion comes in? (I am using the Swiss ephemeris which claims

tremendous accuracy - but they all do!)

Mani

Goravani Das,

natabara uses a very different date, the 14th I believe, and comes up with

the Moon in Simha. What is going on?

Apparently you did not read my non-meat mails! February 18th 1486 = 27th Feb.

1486. The former date is the date as was in vogue at that time according to the

Julian calendar. It was based on a year of about 365.5 days. Since the real

period is a bit less the seasons started earlier and earlier. From the time of

Julius Caesar, who established the Julian Calendar, till 1486 a total difference

of 9 days had accrued. A hundred years later Pope Gregory brought in the

Gregorian calendar, which we follow today. To effect this 10 days had to be left

out suddenly - like we do summer time. So in Italy I think in 1586 the day

after October 4th was called October 15th BOT 5th! The problem is that all

countries did not take over the correction. Russia was perhaps the last. In

their records the Revolution of 1918 is still referred to as the October

Revolution, but according to our calendar it was November.

Books generally give dates before 15 october 1586 as julian dates and after

that in gregorian - but often for all countries! If the country had not changed,

we have a problem finding out which date to use. If the DOB of a Russian born in

1910 is given "as recorded at the registry" or family bible etc. it has to be

corrected by adding 11 days to enter it into GJ. But if just given without any

comment we are stymied!

To add to the confusion France used a "republican calendar" for a period after

the revolution, till Napoleon changed it to gregorian.

What surprises me is that GJ takes gregorian for a date before 15 october 1586.

Generally programmes take all dates before 15 october 1586 as julian and all

dates after that as gregorian. This is not good, for all countries did not

change simultaneously. So it should be possible to specify date entries with

OS(Old Style) or J (Julian) otherwise automatically gregorian. Or the programme

should know exactly when to correct for each country - but this too has catches

and is not recommendable. Whoever enters should first make sure which dating the

source means.

regards

Mani

PS: when the change was made in Britain around 1770, 11 days were struck off the

calendar. There were riots with people shouting "Give us our 11 days back!"

Apparently they didn´t feel happa getting 11 days older overnight!
