My Cc doesn't give an exact birth time (that I can find), merely saying that

there was a lunar eclipse at the moment, however Raman in Notable Horoscopes

says he was born on 18th Feb 1486 (O.S.) 8:56 p.m. at Mayapur, which would

be about 61.25% of the way through 11-P. Phalguni, so that would be Venus

dasa. (Using Lahiri ayanamsa, but Raman's gives the same dasa.)

BTW, this brings up an interesting question. Raman gives a birthsite at

88 deg 25 mts E by 23 deg 23 mts N;

the ACS atlas gives a location of

88 deg 8 mts E by 22 deg 27 mts N,

which is a distance of about 67 US survey miles or about 108 kilometres as

the crow flies. As far as latitudes go, that's a difference of 64 miles/104

km.

Here's the issue, which I have been reluctant to bring up before since in

most cases the issue isn't a big one; perhaps in this case it is, though:

One of the hats I wear is as a wireless data network architect, specializing

in outdoor, rather longish radio links. As such, I have to do a lot of work

with location specifications (lat&lon, UTMs, that sort of thing) to

determine the azimuths for aiming antennae. I can tell you that there is

absolutely no such thing as an absolute longitude or latitude; any longitude

or latitude is always made against some base survey, which itself is based

upon a mathematical model of the earth's surface. These models change with

time, as our understanding of the earth's surface improves.

In the United States, as well as most other parts of North American

continent, prior to 1986, the prevailing survey was the North American

Survey of 1927, which was based upon the Clarke model of 1866. Other parts

of the world use different surveys and different models. (In the US, the

individual STATES use different surveys and models!) It wasn't until >>>

1984 <<< that a single, worldwide standard began to emerge (and, of course,

many of the US states don't use it) so that GPS units would all give

consistent lats & lons. (If you have a GPS, that's what the "datum" option

selects; WGS-84 is this standard I'm talking about.)

Raman's book pre-dates this standard by a few years. As such, unless his

coordinates were converted to WGS-84 from whatever was in use in India at

the time, you won't be able to reproduce his (or anyone else's) research

unless you know either the name of the town (which he generally does not

give) or the map datum he used (which he definately doesn't give).

In some cases, the discrepancy is many, many miles, which of course can

affect the dasa period. Whether this is the source of the discrepancy

between the ACS Atlas' location for Mayapur and Raman's, I don't know. But

the discrepancy in this case is quite large no matter what the cause.

Anyone else ever run into a problem trying to reproduce a chart from a given

set of coordinates?

Raman's data in this case is pretty well-known not to match Vaishnava

tradition. I think you get Libra rising in this case. Caitanya Caritamrta

actually states "simha lagna, simha rasi". This of course literally gives a

"Gaura Chandra" - Golden Moon rising! The actual time of birth is not given

anywhere as far as I know. This reference from the CC is the closest it

gets. Sri Vayu Purana also predicts astrological stuff, but no astrological

positions are given:

paurnamasyam phalgunasya

phalguni-rksa-yogatah

bhavisye gaura-rupena

saci-garbhe purandarat

"I shall advent in the month of Phalguna, when the star Phalguni is

conjoined with the full moon. I shall incarnate in a golden complexion in

the womb of Saci and Purandara Misra."

Use the Leo Lagna Rasi chart, and you'll probably find it makes sense.

Remember also that Lord Caitanya's grandfather was an astrologer, and

Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati were both also great

astrologers (I think Srila Prabhupada presents Lord Caitanya's chart as

given by Bhaktivinoda Thakur, somewhere in the CC).

Hope this helps,

Pursottam

Yes, Mr. Pursottam,

You are correct. The data given in B.V. Raman's book "notable horoscopes" is

wrong. Those of you, who have Lahiri's Table of Ascendants can check it

also.

with best regards,

Manoj
