Parashara, in his Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, recomends sadhana, i.e., worship of the planetary deity, and prayer ( mantras ) for the planetary deities. Parashara assures us that the creator Brahma, from whom he said he had learned Jyotish, instructed the planetary deities to diminish the karmic burden of those who do thusly. Gemstones are not mentioned by Parashara as an astrological remedy. Gemstones do exist which have powers, such as the Syamantaka jewel mentioned in the Bhagavat Purana, but it isn't stated anywhere that using such a jewel will ameliorate planetary afflictions. What authority from the Vedic era recomends using jewels in this way? None that I know of, just more recent and lesser " authorities ". We do know, however, that we have a tendency to fool ourselves and that tantriks have a tendency to cheat and make good money from doing some hocus pocus.
