You are right, Wendy, and so I will take the responsibility to making myself even more clear than before. First, if you read BPHS, Parasara speaks of sign aspects, and any planets in those signs, as "Purna drishti", which means "full aspect". Thus the "full" aspects of cardinal signs and any planets in them, form to the fixed signs, and any planets in them (excluding the adjacent ones) . Aspects obtain from dual signs and planets in them, to all other dual signs, and planets in them. If you read the Sanskrit, and you understand what it means, then you can understand that Rahu in Cn as a *full* aspect on Mars in Sc. Is that clear? OK, then lets go on to the next point: The 12th is the house of personal failings, or "self-undoing"; malefics in the 8th house (barring other placating influences from benefics) has to do with serious, or chronic conditions pertaining to health, which threaten one's longevity; Rahu has to do with drugs and intoxications, as well as obsessions or compulsions (addictions). In the chart given, whose birth data I shall repeat again after this sentence, Rahu is strong in the sign of Cancer (according to Sarvartha Chintamani), and Atmakaraka Mars is strong in the sign of Scorpio. Still, Rahu is inimical to the Moon, and can thus bring confusion and distortion of one's reality when (1) it conjoins the Moon; (2) cases the Moon's eclipse); and (3) is in the Moon's sign and/or conjoins the Moon in the Navamsa chart. Female Nov. 3, 1980 10:10 AM CST (+6) 87W54:12 30N31:22 So the young woman became a heroin addict exactly at the beginning of the Mars Vim. dasa, at the age of 14. She managed to get free from the bad association she was in, went to Europe to stay with family, and so before the end of that dasa, she had overcome the heroin addiction (due to strength of sign placement, of Rahu and Mars). She has been "clean" now for one year, and is pursuing studies in Jyotish (the dasa of the Atmakaraka will bring spiritual and occult studies, and with Rahu's aspect, can bring studies in Jyotish, provided there is a strong presence of Jupiter in the chart, which there is, with her Jupiter joining 8th lord Moon (dispositor of Rahu), in the 10th house. Now, the point about the *exact* orb existing in the trinal relationship between planets, in this case between Rahu and Mars, was already given in many previous posts. They are in exact trinal relationship in the above chart, thus putting them in a close conjunction in the 8th house in the Navamsa chart. Mars is exalted with Rahu and Moon in Navamsa, so what starts out to be a horrible addictive pattern, concludes with a spiritual renewal through the study of Jyotish. I hope that makes things clear. One last point: I have seen addictive patterns in charts where Rahu and Saturn conjoin/aspect the following houses, in order of importance: the 8th, the 5th, and the 12th. If the weak lord of the asc. or Atmakaraka is involved, or if the weak Moon (waning and afflicted) joins the fray, then addictive patterns are a certainty. Even just having Rahu in the 8th, or reverse, with Rahu in 2nd and Ketu in the 8th, by themselves, will bring the person to struggle with addictions of some sort at points throughout life.
