Dear Raghu, Nice and honest. Parasara taught what was relevant to his times: no aircraft, no computers, no drugs, no amok-runners. The said gadgets were there, like vimanas, but were not for the public, strictly reserved for the king only. The average astronomer would not have been in a position to calculate the positions of the real outers, whose influence on individual lives could be felt only in case of very close conjunctions. Even close aspects are relatively weak. A neptune conjunct AC could have meant rather excessive consumption of soma; a uranus conj. perhaps a curious and unorthodox mind; a pluto conjunction a secretive intriguing character, or one with a talent for para-normal things like telekinesis. But all these things can be seen from other planetary positions as well. it is modern civilization that brings these planets into prominence. It is your right to keep away from them. But perhaps also your obligation to evaluate their influences. Parasara did not teach for eternity or close his teachings as the last word. No teacher wishes that his pupils will prove his teachings to be false, but every TRUE teacher hopes that his pupils will add to the knowledge and thank his teacher for having given him the background! As always, your logic, Mani, is quite sound. Personally, I never neglect to seriously consider the effects of outer planets, in exact aspect to natal planets, either in the rasi chart, or in transit. I was like Das in the beginning of my study of Jyotish, and never considered them, until transit Pluto came to a roving conjunction of my natal Moon, a process which took a long time to complete. What happened? I had a complete change of lifestyle, from a Vedic monk living a strict ashram life in several temples, and service to my guru, to living apart form the ashram, and supporting myself as an astrologer. The difference between these two lifestyles, is like night and day, needless to say. Of course, in my chart, there is an exact 90 degree angle between natal Moon and Pluto, which makes the transiting effect of Pluto to the Moon all the more poignant some 40 years after birth. Still, the outers were not a part of Parasari astrology, for whatever reason (the possibilities given by you above), and so they can never really be implemented with the essential methodologies of Jyotish. For example, which naksatra would you ascribe to Pluto? And how would you distribute rulership of three extra planets to 27 naksatras? Would some naksatras have two rulers, an inner planet, and then one of the outers? Tithis (lunar days) also come under the rulership of planets, according to a fixed scheme. Where would the outer planets fit into this system? Also, if you wanted to quantify the effects of their transits using Ashtakavarga, which sector of the AV chakra would you assign to the outer planets? They would not fit, as only 7 planets + the lagna fit into that scheme. Further, the nature of Jyotish, is that it is more individually oriented so far as the definitions of karmas, and their timings, are concerned. The idea of taking only the planets within the orbit of Saturn (the figurative wheel of time who dispenses all good and bad reactions to karmas) seems to show that the "inner" planets have more to do with the functions of individual karmas. Those that are extra-Saturnine, may not be considered as such (although they sure give you a good kick in the butt by transit, whether or not you consider that karma!). So really, the only way you are going to integrate the outer planets into the scheme of Vedic astrology, is to see their transits, or natal contacts. So far as the naksatras underlying the most important predictive methods in Jyotish: including the outers, would be like mixing oil with water (in other words, they will never mix). You would have to create an entirely new predictive system, which would have virtually nothing to do with Vedic astrology as we know it. In this connection, Rudyard Kipling was once quoted as saying: "Two trains starting at the same time, one traveling to the East, and the other traveling to the West, will never meet on the other side". That hypothesis rings true to me.
