Hi Savants, Beginners, Warriors! I too have been following this discussion with interest, but from certain other angles. The last lunar eclipse, when the moon turned red as Mars, seems to have brought in very martial tones! ........ > Ketu eclipses the Sun so is potentially the strongest force in any chart having the power to block the Sun's energies........... > Rahu eclipses the Moon and can show illusion and deception. People under the > influence of Rahu can be great conmen and frauds........ I don´t understand the astronomical logic of these statements at all! Why does Rahu eclipse the moon and Kethu the sun? The nodes are points where the moon crosses the ecliptic plane - and the moon is always near the earth, so that the nodes are also near the earth. Wherever the nodes are, an eclipse is possible only when one of the nodes lies between the earth and the sun and the other away from the sun. When the moon is near the inner (nearer to sun) node, a solar eclipse occurs, when it is near the outer node a lunar eclipse. ( The path of the moon is NOT around the earth, but around the sun, accompanying the earth like a spiral spring wound around the orbit of the earth.) Now the nodes go around the zodiac once in about 18 years and 6 months. So a solar or lunar eclipse can take place when the moon is near rahu or kethu, depending on their location. Check the two - solar and lunar - eclipses of 25 Dec. 2000 and 10 Jan 2001 with those of 21 Dec 1991 and 4 Jan 1992 (9 years apart) and you will see that the nodes have interchanged. So the statement that rahu eats the moon and kethu the sun has either no meaning, OR has a "revolutionary" meaning: THAT NODE WHICH IS NEARER TO THE SUN HAS TO BE CONSIDERED AS KETHU AND THAT WHICH IS FURTHER AS RAHU! It is possible to determine which is which by checking the positions during successive eclipses, but there will be a period every 9 years or so, when the roles change and it won´t be easy to say when exactly!(?) This of course will be a pain! PLEASE COMMENT! ................. > As a last comment on the nodes it would seem there has always been two camps > with some saying they are "shadow" grahas and therefore cannot cast aspects > and others who think they cast a trine aspect. My advice to everybody is to > find out yourself which is right. I think there is a difference between shadow grahas and the nodes. The former are hypothetical, but the nodes are there and the wobbling of the moon at those points shows that they have some "gravitational" effect - like Einstein´s "space warp" around a heavenly object. Or the sound barrier, which has no physical existence but causes a tremendous shock to an airplane "crossing" it. A ship crossing the equator is not in any way affected! If, as I believe, planets do not emanate qualities but act as prisms of various shapes and densities which concentrate and reflect a common cosmic energy, splitting it into a spectrum whereby the components refract out in various definite directions, as a glass prism does with sunlight, then the nodes could do that too! This would also explain the idea of "aspects". Apart from these things, Robert´s and others´ comments raise many questions, but also seem to answer many! Rahu must always Kethu and vice versa. One goes out of tradition, breaks away; the other restricts, introverts. This becomes an enigma, if they aspect mutually. The remark made by Chris that Robert´s "attemt to restrict certain effects to 3°20´ orbs to fit navamsas" is a "sneaky" way to bring in Western astrology is itself a "sneaky" way to "defend" western methods! NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS! I think that one has to look at it the other way. The methods of western astrology are not wrong but restricted to certain salient features. The western aspects are mainly based on 30 degree and 45 degree angles. The varga charts go much further, using all sorts of angles starting from the 60 degree divisions. One only looks at the "varga" placements as if they were lapidary and arbitrary locations, but they are actually trines, squares etc. in a harmonic system. Some advanced wester astrologers do study harmonic charts, where the 360 degree zodiac is symbolically reduced to smaller angles - which again leads to shadow planets, Hamburg school etc. The difference is like in music: western music restricts itself to 8 main tones and 7 half-tones, but Indian music has 1/32 intervals, which makes it sound different, although the framework and principles are the same. Finally, my hobby-horse: Using the interesting comments on rahu I checked my chart. I have Jupiter trine Rahu, square moon in rasi. Everything in my life fits in very well if Jupiter and Rahu sit in the same navamsa. They do - but only if I use Fagan´s or Chandrahari´s ayanomsa. Lahiri splits the up and spoils the show! Thanks for reading and praises for your patience! regards Mani
Guest guest
Dear Mani I have put up some more thoughts on Rahu and Ketu on my page under that heading. Spirited debate as seen lately is very healthy on both sites. I have a number of new articles to write and post on my site. I welcome any comments, criticisms or general banter about any of it. See my article on Rahu and Ketu at www.fortunecity.com/victorian/coldwater/83 Andrew
