Guest guest
Hello I'm not a follower of Amritananda Mayi Ma, or "Amma" or "Ammachi", but I know a good deal about her as a good friend of mine is one of her ardent devotees, and loaned me a video which I watched. I also read some of her pamphlets. Amma is an Indian woman, in her late forties now, who has for many years given darshans called "Bhavas", "Krishna Bhava" and "Devi Bhava", where she manifests these Divine beings herself, as if she is that deity. These days, mostly she shows "Devi Bhava". She sits on a seat of honor, and manifests this deity, kindof like as if in a trance or channeling you might say, though they don't say that, and in this altered state she hugs whomever comes up. People line up, and receive a hug. She says "Son" or "Daughter" to most, and gives them some prasad, usually a chocolate kiss or something. This sounds very simple, but many people, tons, feel something special coming from her. She wears clothing as if she is the deity, and many believe, she actually IS the deity. Her devotees call her "God" often, or "Holy Mother". She is acting at these times as if she is "Devi" Herself, the mother of all, the female side of God. Her followers believe this. Other than these "Bhavas" which are a type of darshan of a spiritual entity you could say, she also speaks rather normal Hindu like preachings, and she has an ashram that can be visited in India, many go there, and she travels constantly. She was recently featured in people magazine. The numbers of her followers are quite large. There are many in every city by now. You could say she is currently one of the most popular Indian Guru figures on the planet. Physically, she is a smiling overweight average looking Indian woman nearing 50 years old. It's in her presence that people feel something special. In pictures, she looks like a happy normal Indian woman. If you see pictures of an overweight smiling Indian woman in white in somebody's home, it's probably Amma being resepected. There are a few such personalities on Earth right now- Indian woman who are claiming to be, or who are claimed by others to be, the "Devi" herself. Of them all, Amma is the one most widely known it seems, the one with the most popularity. Some Hindu sampradayas or lineages do not accept any of these personalities as genuinely being what they or their followers claim them to be, but the fact is, aside from this formal lack of acceptance in more rigid Hindu sects, the followers are getting encouragement in love, Divine love, the Divine path, etc., so who can say boo to that? Love is love. But philosophy, scripture, and Hindu Sanctimony are complex subjects. Amma is successful in her mission, and many feel she is their Guru, and even God Herself. So that's who Amma is in a nutshell. Hope I've done right at least in being impartial as I tend to stand on the side of the more rigid philosphical sects who do not accept Divinity in humans very easily as is the case in these other personalities of popular followings. Hello Das Goravani, I am wondering do you have any kind of experience about transcendental consciousness?! As i have read this and so many postlists, i can realize that this knowledge is very rare - or in fact is not: those who have the knowledge doesn´t take part to quite public conversations, because it´s useless to communicate with those who doesn´t understand. Not saying i´m follower of Amma, but i understand the Divinity in her presence. She´s not the only one. http://www.ammachi.org/ Regards, Mark
