Dear Mani

"Osiris among the Egyptians was the lord of the netherworld, the lord of

death."

<<Not exactly. More the final home of souls, so that the world of Osiris is

actually Heaven or Vaikunta. In the beginning Asar was the source of all life.>>

The description is "netherworld". According to the English dictionary,

netherworld means nether = lower and netherworld = hell, the underworld. This

description is more akin to Pluto than to Vaikunta. So, Osiris is more like

Yama, the Superintendent of Death. This means that it is only a temporary home

for the souls.

<<I do not see karma as "crime and punishment" or a matter of paying debts or

getting rewards. To me the various wrlds are schools and universities. We have

all to learn innumerable things. The same teacher appears like Vishnu to a

talented child, Yama to one who is not and needs additional tuition.>>

I have a similar opinion except when regarding "paying debts or getting

rewards." The 5th house indicates "merits done in past lives" Karma is

activities done according to the vedic injunctions. Akarma is the refusal to

follow those injunctions. And vikarma means activities done against the vedic

injunctions. For example, if you have an emotional karma with X person from

previous life, you cannot be happy emotionally until you paid your debt to X. X

has the contract signed by you in which you promised to pay in full. It is

until X is satisfied and let you go, when you can fulfill your emotions. By

changing your inner self, you can change your environment.

This description is common. But other sources give other descriptions as well. I

have to spend a lot of time in the Berlin libraries to get my whole thesis

together. Part of my ideas are confirmed by the visions and dreams of an english

woman called Dorothy Eady. In a past life she had been the beloved of the

Pharaoh Sethi I and his soul visited her frequently in this life. This led her

to Egypt, where she did valuable work for the archaeological department.

Actually I planned to visit her, bur she had just died. she actually practised

the ancient religion!

I am not quite convinced by this: this means that X has to keep waiting till I

pay, and also does not have a chance to forgive and let go. I think deed and

soul are independent. If I owe Y a debt, I cannot find peace till I "repay", but

this does not have to be to Y, but to Z, who represents Y for me. Y on the other

hand would benefit by letting me go. It is a question of passing on the favours

one receives, rather than repaying. The Gita injunction of "give without

expecting reward" would have little meaning otherwise.

Mani
