Guest guest
Happy greetings to Randall and all list members! I was reading Dr. B.V. Raman's book My Experiences in Astrology earlier today (Friday) where he wrote, "According to Hindu numerology the lower, middle and upper parts of the body are signified respectively by the unit, the tenth and the hundredth digits. The eight planets in the order of the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, the Moon and Rahu correspond to numbers 1 to 8." (pg. 202, Fourth reprint 1995, Ram Printograph, New Delhi). This does not account for the number 9, unless 9 means Navamsha or Lagna or something else(?) Dr. Raman goes on to say that he asks a person to give him a 3-digit number, and from that number he is able to determine from the "position" of the planet in terms of unit, ten, and hundredth, as well as the planet whose number is in that placement, the nature of one's health. I wonder what the 9th number might be? Best to all, Carol Hook In a message dated 11/3/2000 11:36:17 PM Eastern Standard Time, rikb2 writes: << Hi All! I'm new to this list, but I've been studying Western Astrology for some 15 years, and Vedic Astrology for the past 2 or 3 years. I have a question about the use of 'magic squares' in Vedic astrology. These are grids of numbers where the rows, columns, and diagonals all add to the same number. These figures are used in the West, too, and the ones used now are usually the ones mentioned by Cornelius Agrippa. For example, he gives the magic square for Saturn as a 3x3 grid as follows: 4 9 2 rows = 15 = columns = diagonals 3 5 7 8 1 6 No one is sure where Agrippa came up with these magic squares, but many scholars have expressed the opinion that they were taken from Arabic sources. What I am wondering is how these magic squares are used in Vedic astrology. Are different ones associated with different planets? I have heard they're used as remedies for various astrological conditions. Is anyone willing to type in the ones that are used for remedy purposes? I am interested in these from a mathematical as well as an astrological perspective -- especially the ones that are 5x5 (these are associated with Mars in western occultism). Can anyone direct me to some references from Vedic sources that would be good? Namaste! Randall >>

Guest guest
Hi Dave, I have the book in front of me now and it reads: 1 - Sun 2 - Moon 3 - Mars 4 - Mercury 5 - Jupiter 6 - Venus 7 - Saturn 8 - Rahu 9 - Ketu My knowledge of Pundit Navaratnam is that he's an esteemed jyotishi for over thirty years. He obtained (jyotish) doctorate in Bangalore, has written several books (on a very small scale and probably hard to get), and my personal knowledge of him is that he's a truly gifted astrologer. My opinion is that (until I KNOW better myself) I can comfortably accept what pundit says is correct. Guest guest
- Wendy Vasicek <wenvas <gjlist > Saturday, November 04, 2000 10:40 PM RE: [gjlist] Magic Squares I am a good friend of Pundit K.N Navaratnam and he also wrote a book called "The Numerological Key To Success" back in the 70's which is a hard cover book which is quite comprehensive. I think he got an honory doctorate from a Texas university for it also. I have a copy of it in front of me which he gave me ages ago. His book on numerology in marriage was a small book he wrote about numerology for marriage. He has a very interesting system for choosing a suitable name where you count the padas from Aries according to the number of your name. He urges me to call myself Pundit Andrew Lynn as this name falls in a pada in my 10th house in Scorpio which is very good for an astrologer. Andrew Lynn falls in the 8th house which shows why I have probably been a misfit for most of my life so far. I go to the old Pundits house every second day to rev him up and talk about astrology for a few hours. He is a regular fountain of knowledge and he can usually find a correct astrological explanation for most problems. He cracks up laughing when I tell him about my postings about Mars and Venus and he is always trying to get me to write to Richard Houck to stir him up as we often read his site. He is scathing on western astrologers in the fact he feels they are using the wrong system and can't come up with a prediction to save themselves so go into long winded psychological spools. Like myself, he feels if astrology has no practical use what is the point of wasting your time studying it. We have both been pondering the flooding that is occuring all over the world in the last few months. A few days ago he rang me up and said he remembered something from an ancient Tamil text he had read as a youngster that states that when Venus gets 30 degrees in front of the Sun as it transits through Nakshatra Swati it will bring great floods. Venus went into Swati at the end of September 30 degrees in front of the Sun and is still more than 30 degrees in front of the Sun. There has been flooding everywhere from Europe to Asia to Australia in this time, he may be on to something here. I will certainly be filing this away to see if it happens again in the future. I am also a keen hand reader and a member of a group that was formerly known as the British Cheirological Society, a small but dedicated group dedicated to demystifying handreading and looking at it scientifically. I would be very interested to hear from anybody who knows anything about Vedic handreading as there is no literature about it as far as I know. The books I have seen from India on astro-palmistry are a lot of old bollocks as far as I'm concerned with much of the material plagiarized from William Benham or Cheiro. Other books from India talk about fish and flags or swastikas on the palm that just are not found on hands. Perhaps the other biggest flanker in "palmistry" is the mounts which actually don't exist as they are explained in Palmistry. Palmistry is a misleading name as it alludes to reading the palm, whereas a skilled handreader will skim information from everything from the nails, to the fingertips, to the skin dermatoglyphics etc. I spoke to Pundit Arulpragasum a few months ago about handreading as he claimed to be an expert, he was a bit reluctant to say much when he looked at my hands for whatever reason and he died about a week later so I wasn't much of an omen for him either! I will also be interested to see Hart Defouws new book on relationship compatibility as I feel he did a good job in "Light on Life" and this aspect of astrology needs a good reference book as very few people seem to understand how to really match people up. I personally have spent a lot of time and effort in looking into match making also. The old Pundit has 50 years of stories about relationships that have either worked or failed. I have picked his brain dry on this subject. Too many books now coming out of India are big on intellectual jargon and technical information but very thin on practical usage or simple examples. This is shown clearly by the many people who write to me from India who have studied astrology very hard but are unable to come to any conclusions as they are over- rationalizing a horoscope and missing the obvious. Pundit K.N Navaratnam always come to very correct conclusions by using very simple, basic principals. I endevour to do the same. Sometimes people write seeking my warped views on something but I accidently delete their email before I have replied, I apologise for this and would urge you to keep bothering me as I enjoy hearing others ideas. Since Mercury has been retrograde the list has been a bit quiet. It looks as if I'll have to get Mars and Venus firing again. I for one won't be getting on a plane when Mercury is retrograde as there always seems to be a plane disaster when Mercury is retrograde. JFK junior went down in hid plane last year when Mercury was retrograde if I remember correctly. Maybe it could be worth looking into Buddy Holly, John Denver, Lynard Skinard and others who have died in plane crashes to see if there is any similar planetary aspects. regards Skinbags > To All > > I have a book (on numerology in marriage) by pundit K N Navaratnam in which > he states: the numbers 1 through to 8 are ruled by the planets SU through to > SA respectively, while 8 is ruled Rahu and 9 by Ketu. > > In practice I have found this to be so. Guest guest
Dear Andrew, When you see pundit next would you kindly give him my regards. I have the greatest regard for him. Although our encounter was only brief I'm sure he'll remember me. He offered to be my teacher when he read my horoscope, but it wasn't to be. I had my greatest lesson from him when he read my horoscope, and then he kindly shared his knowledge with me (informal lesson) when I took my husband along for a reading, and again when I took my sister. I hope he remembers me as I've NEVER forgotten him. His predictions regarding my career as an astrologer are certainly coming to fruition as I'm now part of the team of Dirah Academy...and really it's all due to him...he impressed me so much! On my web site (page about wenvas), the (almost, but not quite) mentor I referred to is him. You might like to take a look. http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/richmond/21/index.htm Best Regards Wendy Andrew Lynn [skinbags] Sunday, November 05, 2000 1:30 AM gjlist Re: [gjlist] Magic Squares - Wendy Vasicek <wenvas <gjlist > Saturday, November 04, 2000 10:40 PM RE: [gjlist] Magic Squares I am a good friend of Pundit K.N Navaratnam and he also wrote a book called "The Numerological Key To Success" back in the 70's which is a hard cover book which is quite comprehensive. Guest guest
Dear Carol, the technique under reference is called AshtaMangalam and is from Prasna Marga, in the technique usually 108 beads or coins are sorted into three piles, the first pile the first digit, the second pile the second digit and the third pile the last digit. Then these piles are counted and divided by 8, and the remainder is taken, this way there are only 8 possiblities. If you use the technique by asking the person for a three digit number, then 9 becomes a possibility, in this system since all the odd numbers are auspicius, 9 is also favorable. Planet wise 9 can indicae Ketu. That is how i have handled siuations when people give me a 3 digit number with a 9 in it. I prefer, however, to cast beads if at all possible, and follow the techniques as outlined in Prasna Marga. There are additional steps to the teclhnique taht can be used for timing the question and also for gijving a more final outcome, Prasna Marga is reccomended if you would like to look into this technique more. take Care, Ernst Wilhelm > Happy greetings to Randall and all list members! > I was reading Dr. B.V. Guest guest
- Wendy Vasicek <wenvas <gjlist > Sunday, November 05, 2000 4:48 AM RE: [gjlist] Magic Squares I called him but he can't remember you, if you send your horoscope I will guarantee he will remember that! The one thing I like is he cuts through all the nonsense you read in books. His mind is still very sharp and his memory is very good. I checked out your site and its very good. Pundit has been telling me for the last two years to get a site up and running but I'm so lazy I never get around to it. Keep up the good work. Andrew P.S If any body wants a reading me and Pundit will do one for $150 by email. We'll both analyse the chart and I'll type it out as he can't type to save himself. He has Mercury conjunct Uranus and I have Moon conjunct Uranus so I'm more intuitive than he is and don't always agree with him about certain things as he has very traditional ideas about women in particular! Between us we make a pretty mean team as he was born with Moon, Sun and Jupiter in Aquarius in the 4th house and I was born with Jupiter, Mars and Mercury in Aquarius in the lagna. If Al Gore doesn't become President I have vowed to give up astrology and he is not looking to flash in the polls, so this may be my last posting........................ > Dear Andrew, > > When you see pundit next would you kindly give him my regards.
