Guest guest
Dear Sanjay << Is the Vaishnava Version of the Gayatri mantra different from what is given in the Rig Veda? Kindly confirm and if so what is the difference? >> We say that the Gayatri mantra has 7 lines. The Gayatri mantra given in the Rig Veda is the first line and we have 6 more lines. Another difference is that while in Hindu Temples the Gayatri mantra is chanted loud, we are told to chant it in the mind and it is a secret mantra given through the Parampara. Also, initiation into the mantra is very important and confidential. Some Vaisnava schools give the mantra without rituals and some other organize a fire yagya soon after the mantra is given and to put the brahminical thread around the neck of the new brahman. Guest guest
Jaya Jagannath Dear Natabara Prabhu, Thank you for sharing this. There can be no Gayatri without giving the sacred thread. However, the rules can be different and some like mine can be a bit too strict. That is besides the point. I have some queries and these are below your answers. RATH: THE GAYATRI MANTRA AS GIVEN IN THE RIG VEDA DOES NOT HAVE "OM BHUR BHUVA SVAH" AT THE BEGINING. THUS YOUR GAYATRI MANTA IF STARTING WITH THIS WOULD HAVE A LINE BEFORE THE GAYATRI OF THE RIG VEDA. ALSO SOMETIMES INSTEAD OF THREE LOKA (BHU, BHUVA & SVAH FOR SWARGA), SEVEN LOKA ARE MANTIONED (MAHAH, JANAH, TAPAH & SATYAM). MANY OF THE MANTRAS ALSO TRY TO INCLUDE A LINE OR TWO IN PROPITIATION OF BRAHMA. DOES YOURS HAVE A LINE FOR VISHNU OR KRISHNA AS WELL? CAN YOU ASK YOUR GURU'S TO INDICATE THE SOURCE OF THE MANTRA OR IF IT IS MENTIONED IN ANY BOOK OR SACRED LITERATURE? THIS WOULD BE VERY BENEFICIAL FOR THE WHOLE PARAMPARA. Another difference is > that while in Hindu Temples the Gayatri mantra is chanted loud, we are told > to chant it in the mind and it is a secret mantra given through the > Parampara. CHANTING IS TO BE DONE AT 3 LEVELS. THE BASIC GAYATRI CAN BE CHANTED IN ANY OF THE THREE MODES OF VACH (LOUD), MANAH (CONSCIOUS MIND AS IN A WHISPER) OR DHYANA (DEEP MEDITATION- WHERE IT DECOMES VERY QUIET). Also, initiation into the mantra is very important and > confidential. IT IS CORRECT TO GIVE THE SACRED THREAD AS RAKSHA AFTER THIS INITIATION. > Yours, Natabara das THANK YOU FOR SHARING.
Guest guest
That's exactly what I have heard. Although I have not researched it. The Gayatri will be ineffective unless received from proper authorities (Guru) with fire sacrifice and initiation proceedures. You can not just hack you way in. Has anyone heard differently? - "Sanjay Rath" <srath <gjlist > Saturday, August 05, 2000 7:12 AM Re: [gjlist] Gayatri mantra > Jaya Jagannath > Dear Natabara Prabhu, > Thank you for sharing this. Guest guest
Hi, I was told to recite the Gayatri mantra by an astrologer without telling me why it was to be recited. 1. For what reasons is the Gayatri mantra recited? 2. Where can I find the text/audio for the Gayatri mantra on the Net? Thx!
