Guest guest
Dear Karen The transit of Ketu/ Rahu over your Capricorn/Cancer axis and affecting your ascendant and Sun & Mercury brought important changes to your life. Rahu affected your relationships, partners or spouse. The Sun as the owner of the 8th (mystery, the end of things, unexpected results etc) was stimulated by rahu to the point of bringing a more attention on occult studies. Mercury as the owner of your 6th and 9th (enemies, obstacles, diseases/dharma, duty, religion) was affected by Rahu and brought a determination for self-realization. On the opposite side, Ketu the indicator of freedom, moksha, liberation, with his transit on your ascendant, triggered on you the search for the truth. Because you 7th house was affected as well, many people close to you saw changes in their lives and behaviour either for good or for bad depending on their spiritual development. When things like this happen, we see the time when some of our mates have to stay another year in the same class and we have to move forward to our next lesson. It will be a waste of time if we decide to stay with those that chose to stay behind. Like you I am also a Catholic but a Vaisnava as well. The essence of all religions is the same. Unfortunately, for the expansion of a religion we need politicians (to promote) and economists (to maintain). The ideal thing is that we should have a real Guru, Pope, Head etc that is not manipulated by anybody because He/She should be the representative of God on earth. Unfortunately, sometimes (or many times, depending which books of history you read), politicians and/or economists takes over a religion either by persuasion, mistake or revolution and distorts the essence of that religion. When that happens, we should pray to the Lord for things to come back to normality and be tolerant but awake, because we should not allow anybody to take from us what is our right. "O you sons of nectar sons of the nectarine ocean sea; Please listen to me. You were born in nectar. You were born to taste nectar. You must not allow yourselves to be satisfied by anything but nectar. Awake! Arise! And search for that nectar. Search for Sri Krishna REALITY THE BEAUTIFUL>> The above is from the book "The Search For Sri Krishna, Reality The Beautiful" by Bhakti Raksaka Srila Sridhara Deva Goswami. My Guru Maharaj. We need the institution to protect our highest interest, but if the institution fails to deliver we have to go wherever we find the best medicine. Knowledge comes trough sound and mantras are powerful enough to deliver knowledge. Sound is subtle and penetrates the molecules in this universe to the point of modifying the structure of matter. You, me, everybody is a soul, a jiva, a living entity. The symptom of the soul is consciousness. We are conscious of our limitations and ignorance and we want to find the medicine to make us healthy. We cry and scream for help but nobody comes. Then we feel that we have a father and we call for Him. We can call "O father that are in heaven" or O Krishna, or Budha, Narayana, Rama, Ala, etc and if we are sincere, we will get an answer. The vedas says that by the mercy of God, we find Guru and by the mercy of Guru we find God. Jesus Christ is the son of God and a guru for Christians. The Christian institution advises praying the Rosary and that is good enough. The Christian Rosary has 108 beads, the Budhists, Hindus, Shivaists and Vaisnavas have also 108 beads in their japa malas. The idea is that by chanting the holy names on our beads we become more near to God. However, there are some rules and regulations to benefit from the chanting or pray. For example to sin and chant is suicidal, or to joke and chant, or indirect chanting is a waste of time because we do not get the benefit of the chanting. Sincerity and faith are required if we want a benefit. The source of the mantra is also important. If the source is strong enough we will get more benefit than if the source is weak. <<My question for you, or any other learned person, is spiritually would I be better of chanting the Gayatri etc in a language that means nothing to me or praying Christian prayers sincerely like reciting Rosary-- Our Fathers/Hail Mary's. If it was my fate/karma to be born Christian, why should I abandon the religion of my parents.>> Regarding your question, I could say that my mother language is Spanish but I took English to communicate with you, but I have not abandoned the language of my parents. I am a Vaisnava but I have not abandoned the religion of my parents. To be religious means to respect every religion. I love to visit old Catholic churches and admire their architecture and see the devotion put by the workers into the building but I also love to visit the sacred places of other religions. Regarding mantras, I have heard of some Catholics that achieved a trance by chanting the name of Jesus, and I have heard of the miracles of chanting the name of Mary. According to the devotion we see the results. We can pray to the demigods as well, 5000 years ago, people from North India used to worship Lord Indra, the demigod in charge of clouds and rains and the Aztecs used to worship Tlaloc, the demigod in charge of clouds and rains. Indra and Tlaloc are the same person under a different name. My answer is that you should do what is more comfortable to yourself. If you feel that the Christian prayers brings a positive reaction, you should continue. And if you like to experiment chanting the Gayatri mantra and see the results, then go ahead. In my personal experience the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra and Gayatri mantra are very helpful to me, and I also chant the Ganesh mantra and the Shiva mantra and sometimes the Mrityunyaya mantra. In Amsterdam in 1992, a group of astrologers met in a Surya yagya (fire ceremony offered to Surya, the demigod in charge of the Sun) to celebrate a very rare planetary configuration and we chanted the Gayatri mantra 108 times, the Mrityunyaya mantra and we ended chanting the Hare Krishna mantra. It was a nice experience. You may not feel at present an attraction for the Gayatri mantra or other mantras but in time you will be able to understand better. It is like the learning of a foreign language, it takes time but eventually you get the benefits. Kirpall Singh sent you a nice message: <> Guru Nanak is the founder Guru of the Sikhs and Srila Prabhupada told us to give our respects to him because he is a pure devotee of the Lord. I hope that these lines are helpful. Yours, Natabara Das
Guest guest
Dear Natabara, Thank you for your insights. There is a lot to chew on there. I was away on a short vacation until yesterday. I agree with you whole heartedly that essence of all religion is the same and that what really matters is a pure heart and sincere devotion. I was wondering what you meant by "indirect chanting". Saying the words without meaning? Mindless repitition? Thanks again for your thoughtful reply, Karen Natabara <Natabara gjlist <gjlist > Friday, August 04, 2000 4:04 AM [gjlist] God is everywhere >Dear Karen > >The transit of Ketu/ Rahu over your Capricorn/Cancer axis and affecting your >ascendant and Sun & Mercury brought important changes to your life.
