I never heard of Srila Prabhupada observing Nirjala Ekadasi while he was

preaching. Also we have never seen anything stating it is a compulsory

nirjala (without water) ekadasi. It is an optional without water ekadasi

and the benefits are that you get credit for one year of ekadasis.
