Guest guest
Namaskhar, Dhumavati, one of the dash Mahavidyas of Tantra, is known as a widow. Acc to mythology, she ate her own husband. But in practical terms- how can a shakti exist without a consciousness- Shakti has no existence with Shiv, just as Shiv is incomplete without Shakti. Were our Sadhus trying to tell us that pure shakti- without Shiv to guide her- turns towards destruction? Maybe this was a warning to Tantriks who got Shakti by mechanical excersises, but not the Buddhi to control it? Even Kali becomes uncontrollable without Shiv- a famous painting is of a furious Kali stepping on an inert Shiv, which causes all her anger to melt. But then acc. to classical tantra, Shiv is a witness to everything, but all the works of Shakti has his silent support. Without his silent approval, Shakti is helpless. So even though Dhumavati is a widow, she must still have the silent approval of Shiv, which also means he gave her permission to eat him! What is the secret of this mystery? " on the web. Guest guest
Thanks for your query. My two cents on this are: The legend behind Dhumavati's origin says that once Devi Parvati became extremely hungry and asked him for something to eat. When he refused to give her food, she said, "Well, then I will just have to eat you." Thereupon she swallowed Shiva. He persuaded to disgorge him, and when she did he cursed her, condemning her to assume the form of the widow Dhumavati. In the form in which she swallowed Shiva, she actually became one. The Divinity of Purusha and Nari merged and became one. Here Shiva is there - but invisible. Even in this form, Shiva is there with Shakti. In the form in which she disgorged Shiva, Shiva is shown lying at her feet. Even there Shiva is present. Honestly I do not know much about Tantra and would request the learned members here to comment on the same. , shanracer <no_reply> wrote: > > Namaskhar, > > Dhumavati, one of the dash Mahavidyas of Tantra, is known as a " on the web. About the ritualistic meaning, there is not much to add to what baburoy has written. But from a philosophical way if we look at Dhumavati, she is a Shakti without direct control by Shiva(Consciousness). All other shaktis have well defined shiva with them. Here in Dhumavati's case, as explained by baburoy, the Shiva factor is there but hidden in the womb. What i feel is that since Dhumavati is manifested to make the people suffer, bestow widowhood, snatching children from parents, bringing mass destructions etc....this concept of manifestation though has a nod from the highest form of Shiva, yet the Vishnu form of shiva, who wishes to maintain and operate the worlds, may not agree to her principle. Hence perhaps, the direct control is missing. Or we can say, in other Mahavidyas Shiva is controlling, hence due his loving and peaceful nature, he may not do the destruction work...and since destruction too is necessary to purify people of their bad karma, shiva for a moment allows Shakti to swallow him temporarily and thus making her look like uncontrolled form...to continue with her strong purging deeds. What ever it is ...Mother Dhumavati is a very important, kind and loving form. If worshipped, she is not only capable of removing our sufferings and pains, she can take us to the highest state of Enlightenment donno...still i feel it is vague reply...perhaps some other learned one will reply love baba " on the web. Guest guest
> In the form in which she disgorged Shiva, Shiva is shown lying at > her feet. Even there Shiva is present. > The Shakti form where Shiva is lying at feet of shakti is Kali- not Dhumavati. Kali had been fighting demons, but when all the demons dies, she was still angry, and continued her destruction. Even the gods were scared, so they went to Shiva. He lay down in the path of Kali, and as soon as she stepped on him all her anger vanished. This represents that in front of the divine conciousness(Shiv) all the powers of Shakti and her gunas become zero, as He is her master, and Her powers only exist because of His silent approval. Acc. to mythology, Kali then said that she had so much energy, she didnt know what to do with it. Shiv asked her to enter the Earth and come out purified- which she did. The place where she entered is a famous temple, though Ive forgotten which one. Dhumavati is shown as an old woman, very ugly, wearing widows clothes. She is riding a rath, with a flag of a crow on it, which represents bad luck. Whereever she goes she brings bad luck- death, bankruptcy. But she is not evil- she is merely following the rules of nature which have punishment as well as rewards. Tantra says she is the sister of Luxmi, and her exact opposite- so in a way we can say she is like Luxmi. Luxmi brings wealth, but it may destroy as well as help you. Dhumavati brings bad luck, but the intelligent Sadhak will use that to learn natures lessons, and not blame anyone. The Gods are very happy when one understands that bad luck is due to our own Karma, and not due not malefeance of the planets. Dhumavatis time starts in June -July, and ends one day before Diwali(thats why Diwali is celebrated- because it represents start of Luxmis time). If you study history, most of terrorist attacks/Natural disasters happen at the time of Dhumavati- 9/11 in Us, Kargil attack, Tsunami in East asia, the attack on USS Cole, the many landslides taht kill bhakatas near temples also usually happen this time. Dhumavatis temple is is Jwalaji, which is one of the places where Parvatis body parts fell. Dhumavatis ultimate blessing is that she will not come to your house for 7 generations- and unlike Luxmi she is not Chanchal- one she leaves, she leaves. So the question is why dont more people worship Dhumavati(at the moment only Tantriks wishing to harm/kill others worship her, but they havent understood the nature of Shakti- like I said Dhumavati is not evil, merely the Shakti roop that destroys bad karma). Guest guest
A small correction to a couple of postings about MAA Dhumavati. 1. The temple at Jwalamukhi is believed to be MAA KAALI and not Dhumavati. The only temple for MAA Dhumavati is in Kamakya. 2. Maa Dhumavati is believed ( at least in Assam ) to ward off the bad effects of Sani in the horoscope. So in Kamakya you will find a number of people worshipping at the temple of Maa Dhumavati. The conception of MAA Dhumavati is to emphasize the fact that Mother is Mother in whatever form she is. All Tantriks are basically Bhaktas. To a child it does not matter how its mother looks and what she does. It depends on the Mother for protection. It matters little whether she is beautiful or ugly, whether she is a beggar or a queen. Jai MAA KAALI !!! " on the web. Terms of Service.

The only temple for MAA Dhumavati is in Kamakya. Opposite the main place of Jawalaji there is a small canopy where priest do "Ratri Shaiyya" of Mother jawalaji. On the roof there are fotos and mantras of 10 mahavidays and a mention that the jawalaji temple is dedicated to Mother Dhumavati. The chief priest of jawalaji confirmed to me that Jawlamukhi temple is Dhumavati's place. The temple dedicated to Jyesthha or Kali is Chamunda temple, 15 kms from Dharamshala, toward Palampur love baba " on the web. Terms of Service.
