SUPREME GOD AS SHOWN IN THE KANCHI PURANAM

- Saiva Sarabam M.Pattamuthu M.Sc., B.T.

Swamigal has translated Kanchi Puranam into Tamil. The second part of it has been translated by his chief disciple, Sri Kachiappa Munivar. Swamigal's peerless devotion to Lord Shiva and His devotees, his erudite knowledge of Vedas, Sivagamas, Puranas and Thirumurais, his mastery of Tamil and Sanskrit his scholarly way of refuting other religious doctrines and his wonderful methods of explaining the most difficult philosophical points in a pictorial way with impressive similes become palpable while going through his Kanchi Puranam.

Now let us see how Swamigal describes an interesting and thought provoking episode from the KENO UPANISHAD in his Kanchi Puranam.

A long drawn-out war is going on between Devas and Asuras endlessly. For many yugas they are struggling to attain victory which is evading both of them. Despite the vast destruction inflicted by the fierce battle, they go on fighting each other.

From the celestial Kailash, our Mother Uma looks at this war, She begs Lord Shiva to give victory to oneside thereby putting a full-stop to the war. At once the Asuras achieve victory! Our mother is surprised of the success of evil force "Oh Lord, please be kind enough to shower your Sacred Benevolence upon the humble Devas!" prays our Mother. What a wonder! Lord Parameswara's Grace falls on the Devas. The defeated ones are victorious and so joyful.

Now the successful Devas assemble at Devendra's beautiful court. Devendra stands up and declares. "Oh my dear Devas, I am the root -cause of this victory, Don't you know? No, No. without my musclepower can you imagine to win? " intervenes Agni Bagawan. Now his claim is in turn rejected by the terrible Yama'. He has cut short by the challenging Niruthi. Now every important Deva jumps into the fray attributing the Victory to his fighting might. A pandemonium breaks out. There ensues a fierce fight among Devas themselves oblivious of the Holy Grace of Lord Umapathi, the real reason of their success. There is utter confusion.

Again our Mother beseeches Lord to clear the Devas of their ignorance and egoism. To the bewilderment of Devas there appears a handsome Yaksh with matchless grandeur. He erects a small piece of wood or durumbu at the center of the Sabha. With an air of superb might, His eyes survey the whole sabha. All the conflicting Devas stop their shouting to look at the strange Yaksha. " Who are you? Why do you come here? Why do you put the durumbu here?" Thus come forth sharp questions from the surprised Devas.

"Oh! Devas! you want to know my identity. No, That is not relevant here! Look here! Here is a very small durumbu. Can anyone among you tear asunder this durumbu? One who can successfully do so is the real winner of the war just ended." declare the Yaksha.

Thereupon all the Devas accepting the challenge begin to launch their respective Asthras or weapons at the durumbu. Do they succeed in their attempt to dislodge it? The Vajra of Indira or the powerful Chakra of Mahavishnu or Bramastram cannot move the particle even an inch. The desperate Devas hang their heads in shame, thanks to their inability to stir the particle. They once again ask" Who are you, O Mighty Yaksha?"

They are stunned when the Yaksha disappears. Now there appears Goddess Umadevi in front of the amazed Devas. They worship Her Lotus Feet. They pray. "Oh! Mother! who is that all-powerful Yaksha? Will you enlighten us?" Just like a Guru, Mother umadevi describes the identity of the Yaksha who has just vanished.

"Oh! Devas! Listen to me! Who is that handsome Yaksh who has brought home your weakness? He is none but that God who has established the celestial abodes and high positions of all Devas like Brahma, the husband of Vani, who is the basis of all things in the universe, who is worshipped by all, who creates, preserves and destroys all beings and who offers sweet grace to sivagnanis."

"That beautiful Yaksha is none but that Supreme God of whose manifestations are all things, whose truth none can comprehend, who is omniscient, by whose power the whole Universe is sustained, who is adored by the Vedas and who is beyond the reach of those Vedas."

"That pretty yaksha is none but that omnipotent God who removes the fetters of birth, and death, who gives eternal Mukti to those meditating upon him endlessly, worshipping His golden Feet and serving His Devotees, who is Truth, Bliss and Gnanam and who has but the cresent upon his tresses."

"Now, Devas! Do you Understand who that Yaksha is? Submit yourselves before that Supreme Lord Ekambaranathar who has blessed Me under the Holy Mango tree at Kanchipuram. Total surrender at His Lotus Feet is the only way of achieving Everlasting Bliss."

On giving such an elaborate and vivid picture of our Supreme God. Umadevi vanishes. As per Her advice all the Devas led by Vishnu install a Sivalingamoorthy named after them that is, AMARESAN, perform Sivapooja and attain everlasting delight at Kanchipuram.

Thus Kanchi Puranam is a treasurehouse of such lofty incidents which are capable of Leading us into Sparkling Heaven from out of gloomy life.
