Guest guest Posted May 9, 2006 Report Share Posted May 9, 2006 Dear gurujans, since long i wish to wear rudraksha but some or the other reasoni just avoide wearing it because i am afraid that it may creat some adverse effect on me. I am a person who eat some time non veg also and i drink alcohol also. ( mainly because i work in liqeur store and now i feel because of the age i need it for sleep. even though i am a religious minded person and i want to wear rudraksha. I have gaurishankar rudraksha in my puja but i dont know the details of puja. if someone can help me by telling me weather i can wear the rudraksha and which bead will be good for me i will be much obliged. my birth date is 14th october 1954 at 4.10 am in mumbai. I would suggest you to remove rudraksha mala when you take non vegetarian food or alchohol. You can wear it on the next day after taking bath. It may be interesting to know that in 'Kashmiri Shavism' non vegetarian food is not banned. Kashmiri Pundits are strong Shavites. Few of my close friends are Kashmiri Pundits (Kashmiri Brahmin Community). I was told that in Kashmir, festival of 'Mahashivaratri' is celebrated as Diwali on a very large scale. 'Ghata Pooja' is arranged for six days. On the day of Mahashivaratri, marriage ceremony of the Lord Shiva and Sri Parvati is celebrated. As per the custom, a bhog (Prasadam) of nonvegetarian food preparation with dry fruits is offered to the Lord Shiva and Sri Devi Parvati. Only elderly person or head of the family keeps fast for whole day taking only fruits. Kashmiri Pundits practically take non vegetarian food regularly almost daily. Similarly, on the day of thread ceremony of a boy, a Yagnya Pooja for 24 hours is observed. On the second day of the thread ceremony a special food with nonvegetarian preparation is arranged for relatives and close friends. It is difficult to believe these customs. Swamy Vivekananda and Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansa were non vegetarian. Food habits and other customs are totally dependent on the caste in which you are borne and on customs observed in every family. Food choice is totally personal. Worshipping the God is more important. Late Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar has written in his famous book, 'Riddles in Hinduism' that Sri Ram and Sri Krishna were nonvegeterian since they were of Kshatriya caste. I am a Maharashtrian Konkanastha Brahmin, however, of the opinion that in earlier days of 'Chaturvarnya System' these restrictions were put by brahmins to keep low caste people away from worshipping the God. This was done by brahmins that time to protect their own interests and importance in social system. In my present posting, I am not promoting the nonvegetarian food. The great Sindhi Saint Sri Sadhu Vaswani has written that 'Non vegetarian food reduces spiritual power of a person. Of course, this is for a common man like you and me and all others and not for saints who use to take nonvegetarian food. 'No Meat Day' is observed on 25th November every year on the occassion of 'Sri Sadhu Vaswani Jayanti'.
