Guest guest
Dear friends, I was at a conference yesterday and the following verse was cited-- apAre kAvya-saMsAre kavir ekaH prajApatiH tasami yad rocate vizvam tad eva parivartate (Agni Purana, quoted in Dhvanyaloka, etc.) We then tried to remember the verse that goes something like-- asAre khalu saMsAre asti hy eko mahAn guNaH kAvya-rasa-sudhAsvAdaH saGgamo rasikaiH saha I know this wording is incorrect. I started looking for this verse today, and to my great surprise, could not find it. I did find no less than 18 verses from different sources (attached file did not go through, but will share with whoever wants it) that had some variations of the formula asAra... saMsAra, but not the one I was looking for. Where does the above verse come from and what is the correct wording? Tired of spam? Mail has the best spam protection around School education Terms of Service. Guest guest
Dear Jan, The verse occurs in Ludwik Sternbach's "Mahasubhashitasangraha" as verse number 2000, but the wording is slightly different: 2000-1 apAre kAvya-saMsAre kavir eva prajApatiH / 2000-2 yathA vai rocate vishvaM tathedaM parivartate // Kind regards, Ulrich Stiehl, Heidelberg INDOLOGY, Jan Brzezinski <jankbrz> wrote: > > Dear friends, > > I was at a conference yesterday and the following verse was cited- - > > apAre kAvya-saMsAre kavir ekaH prajApatiH > tasami yad rocate vizvam tad eva parivartate > (Agni Purana, quoted in Dhvanyaloka, etc.) > > We then tried to remember the verse that goes something like-- > > asAre khalu saMsAre asti hy eko mahAn guNaH > kAvya-rasa-sudhAsvAdaH saGgamo rasikaiH saha > > I know this wording is incorrect. Guest guest
Hello Jan, I don't know where the verse you are looking for comes from, but a variant reading that I know (and is included in my SamskRtasubodhinI, p. 411) runs like: saMsArakaTuvRkSasya dve phale hy amRtopame / subhASitarasAsvAdaH saGgatiH sujanaiH saha // Best, Madhav Deshpande INDOLOGY, Jan Brzezinski <jankbrz> wrote: > > Dear friends, > > I was at a conference yesterday and the following verse was cited-- > > apAre kAvya-saMsAre kavir ekaH prajApatiH > tasami yad rocate vizvam tad eva parivartate > (Agni Purana, quoted in Dhvanyaloka, etc.) > > We then tried to remember the verse that goes something like-- > > asAre khalu saMsAre asti hy eko mahAn guNaH > kAvya-rasa-sudhAsvAdaH saGgamo rasikaiH saha > > I know this wording is incorrect. Guest guest
Ah. Thanks Prof. Deshpande. No doubt I got two different verses mixed up in my mind (or I heard a mixed up version). This is surely the one I was looking for. I will forward this to the interested parties. "Madhav M.
