Dear list members,

I've been told from several sources that the principle of three levels of

interpretation of words goes back to Yaska and was pointed to the start of

section 7.

The terminology he uses there seems to be: parokSakRta, pratyakSakRta, and

AdhyAtmikya .

But I was told that he was the first to describe the  three levels of

meanings as:

Adhibhautika, Adhidaivika and AdhyAtmikya

Does in fact Yaska use the terminology Adhibhautika and Adhidaivika?

If not Yaska then who was the first to describe the 3 levels of meanings

with the terminology of"

Adhibhautika, Adhidaivika and AdhyAtmikya

Thanks,

Dear Harry,

This is my second attempt in posting the message, the first it seems

did not go through.

The terms that you are looking for are mentioned in sAMkhya sutra of

kapilamuni. yaskamuni is dated approximately of the same epoch as of

pANiNi. kapilamuni is perhaps predated to buddha and perhaps

kapilavastu was named in his honour. The Buddhist philosophy is

influenced by sAMkhya darshanam.

These terms you would find in the tattvapAdaH of sAMkhya sutra,

adhyAtamaM (2.1.8) adhibhutaM (2.1.9) and adhidaivataM (2.1.10).

Best regards,

Arvind.
