(PTI): In stepped up violence against the minority community, militants in Jammu and Kashmir have gunned down 32 Hindus overnight, ahead of a crucial meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Hurriyat Conference. In the first major strike against the community since 2003, Lashker-e-Taiba militants shot dead 19 people, including a nine-year-old girl, after herding them out of their homes in Kulhund village of Doda district in the wee hours today. The militants also killed 13 Hindus they had abducted yesterday from a village in adjoining Udhampur district. The bodies of nine of them were found today from the high reaches of Basantgarh area. Four bodies were recovered yesterday. It is suspected that two Hindus were still being held by the militants. Director General of Police Gopal Sharma said about 10 heavily armed Laskhar-e-Taiba militants, wearing army fatigues, came to Kulhund village, 200 km from here, and ordered people out of their houses in the two localities of Panjoli and Thava. They were herded into the houses of two village heads. The militants then bolted the doors of the rooms and opened indiscriminate fire, killing 19 people and injuring nine. While 10 people were killed in Thava, nine were gunned down in Panjoli. Village heads Gopi Chand and Jagdish Bhagat were among those killed. Bhagat's daughter Sapna Devi too was killed while his wife Giloo Devi and another eight-year-old daughter were among the injured. Of the nine persons injured in the attack, eight were airlifted in Army choppers and admitted to a hospital here. Rajinder Kumar Sharma, who was being treated for bullet wounds at the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) here, said, "The militants took village chief Gopi Chand into one of the rooms and shot him dead. Two militants then bolted the door and opened fire on me and others in his house." Giloo Devi, who lost her husband, village chief Jagdish Bhagat, said her daughter Sapna was killed by the militants when they were leaving their home. According to witnesses, some of the militants were clad in army fatigues while others were wearing Pathan dress. The attack at Kulhund came two days ahead of a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Hurriyat Conference. It drew widespread condemnation from political leaders, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who said it was aimed at derailing the India-Pakistan peace process. Azad, who arrived here from New Delhi today, held a high-level meeting with senior civil and police officers. He also visited the Government Medical College hospital here and enquired about the condition of the injured. Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Baig said, "By singling out Hindus for such a major massacre, they are sending a message to the entire Indian nation that this exercise (peace process) undertaken by the Government is futile."
