'Time for Brahmins to call the shots'

  HT Correspondent

Lucknow, Apr 30

BRAHMINS OF various hues thronged Laxman Mela ground on Sunday,

despite differences in ideology and made it clear that it was time

for the community to reassert its supremacy.

“We were once the leading lights of the society. Today, we have not

only been marginalised, but political parties are using us to serve

their vested political interests. The time has come for us to arise,

awake and unite to establish our superiority in the society,” the

Brahmin leaders said.

Head of Sumeru Math, Kashi, Swami Narendranand Saraswati urged

Brahmin couples to have five children. “Numbers count in a

democracy”, he said, adding, “the community that has a large

population will dominate the political set-up.”

The Shankaracharya of Badrika Ashram Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati

said more Brahmin conferences should be organised to send a clear

message to the society.

World Brahmin Federation president Mange Ram Sharma said Lok Sabha

and Vidhan Sabha seats dominated by the Brahmins had been reserved

for other communities. Terming it a conspiracy, Sharma said Brahimns

should file a PIL in the court.

Varanasi MP Rajesh Mishra said the strength of Brahmins had declined

in both Houses. “We should send more Brahmins to the Lok Sabha, as

well as Vidhan Sabha, to maintain our dominance in politics.”

Stamp and Registration Minister Hari Shankar Tiwari was the man

behind the show. The large turnout clearly indicated that Tiwari

continued to hold sway over his brethren.

Though the State Government had planned to implement reservations in

private colleges and institutions, Tiwari assured people the

government would introduce no new reservation in educational

institutions. Reservation would divide the society, Tiwari rued.

Tiwari’s supporters said that by organising a successful rally, he

had sent a clear message to both the Samajwadi Party and the BSP

leadership. They added though Tiwari had considerable influence

among Brahmins, he still had to remain satisfied with an

insignificant portfolio. Now SP leaders would realise his strength,

they claimed.

Though the BSP was trying to woo Brahmins, the rally showed who the

real leader of the community was, they said.

At the end of the meeting, a resolution was passed that the ‘upnayan

sanskar’ (sacred thread ceremony) of Brahmin children should be

organized according to Vedic rituals.

Among the other points made were: Group marriage should be promoted

to check dowry system, boarding facility would be provided to

children enrolled in Vedic schools, temples of Lord Parshuram would

be established in each district and a Brahmin Parliament should be

established to deal with issues before the community.
