Namaste Simoneji & all,

The 4 a.m. rise is often called the hour of Brahma, but I think the more

technical name is the Brahma Muhurta. I'm not sure what Muhurta means,

would have to look that up. This following piece is from

http://www.vedantavision.com/faq/q10.html I think this explains it

nicely. The explaination speaks with regard to Vedanta, but it also

applies to other systems and paths - be it Tantric, bhakta, etc.

Om Shanti

Neil

Q What is the exact time of the "Brahma Muhurta"? What is its

importance?

A The exact time of brahma muhurta is between 4 and 6 a.m. It is

acknowledged to be the time when sattva manifests itself in us.

Essentially, we are all combination of the three gunas sattva, rajas and

tamas. Brahma muhurta is the time when our sattvika content comes to the

forefront.

It is the ideal time for thinking and reflection on the truths laid down

in Vedanta. Rajas manifests itself after 6 a.m. It is the time when the

day's activities begin, children have to get ready for school, mothers

have to prepare food for the family and office-goers begin getting ready

for work. These mark the beginning of a cycle of frenetic activity. It

is after sundown that tamas begins to manifest itself. A time when all

indulgent activities begin.

Brahma muhurta has tremendous importance in our lives as it is the time

when we can invest our energies in developing our sattvika content. It

is a time when the mind is calm, free from distractions of the world and

the intellect fresh from a good night's sleep. Thus one is able to focus

the mind on absorbing Vedantic knowledge. Brahma muhurta must be

optimally utilised because the spiritual path is about developing sattva

and eradicating rajas and tamas. Brahma muhurta is the time to develop

this sattva in us. So just as we invest our financial resources so as to

maximise them, we must invest our sattvika resources to maximise our

sattvika content and we must invest in sattva.

Namaste Cyra,

The lady made progress in other aspects too, such as romance, meeting

the right people and finally a new soul mate after 18 months. The

holy men and women of India, sadhus, etc., classical yoga ashrams,

yogis, yogins from many traditional lineages use 4am or 4.30am as it

is considered the "holy hour of god" or when all is quiet.

It is the one or two hours before sunrise. There is a term for it and

a further explanation that I can't think of right now off the top of

my head. Perhaps Neilji and other friends here can elaborate and add

further to this subject when they get online.

Gotta run now; lots to tackle today and the next several days. So if

you don't see me around, please know I am always there thinking of

you and sending prayers continuously. Cyra, you have suffered much

and I haven't forgotten how hard things were for you. Hope things are

by now much improved. You are a very brave woman and I take my hat

off to you with much love and bear hugs from Ozland.

Om Namah Shivaya
