Dear Friends

Borrowed from a Concise Dictionary of Indian Philosophy by Mr John Grimes

Ashta Aavarana

For those not familiar with this term is meaning the eight aids or

protections; rules to be observed according to Vira Shaivism

According to Vira Shaivism there are eight protections by which an individual

self protects itself from the three fetters ( mala ) aanava and maayaa and

karma

They are necessary pre requisites to Sat Sthala that is the process in Vira

Shaivism whereby an aspirant grows step by step in various stages through 6

states of consciousness and 6 stages of devotion until he or she attains oneness

with Lord Shiva

The Eight Protections are

Obedience to a teacher ( Guru )

Worship of the Divine Self ( Linga )

Reverence for a person who moves from place to place ( Jangama )

Sipping the water in which the feet of a guru or jangama have been

ceremoniously washed ( Paadodaka )

Offering food to a Guru, Jangama or Linga and then partakeing sacramentally

of what is left over ( Prasaada )

Smearing of Sacred Ash ( Vibhuuti or Bhasma )

Wearing of the Sacred Rosary Beads ( Rudraksa )

And uttering the five syllabled formula Namah Shivaya ( Mantra )

Dhanyavaad cha Pranams Mitra

Aum Namah Shivaya
