Dear devotees,

I am sure that all of you or most of you know about the powers of Rudraksha -

the history behind it, the benefits from wearing it etc. I am writing this to

let you know some of the benefits of chanting Maha Rudram.

Although I was pushed by my mother when I was small to learn Rudram, I never

really did while I had ample opportunities in India. Now in US, I decided to

learn Rudram and started my class. My friend's father-in-law who is visiting US

is teaching me rudram. According to my teacher, the very basic thought of

learning rudram comes to one's mind due to his past punyaas. When one is

benefited by getting such thoughts, one can imagine the punyaas by chanting this

regularly. Also, if someone is interested in learning rudram, I can provide the

recordings of my class in a .wav file. My teacher will chant once and we are

expected to chant twice the same line. I am in the process of recording this in

all of my classes.

Speaking of the powers of Maha Rudram, as I was told, by simply playing those

chanting at home brings lots of benefits. It removes all the evil spirits within

the house and removes all negative forces against us. In fact, there is one real

life incident that goes with this. In the mid 80s, there was a major disaster in

Bhopal, India due to Union Carbide gas leak. Thousands of people died and

several thousands were affected - lost their eyes, kids were born with defects

due to the deadly gas leak - it killed several villages. But one family in the

middle of all these survived this disaster. Nothing happened all of the family

members of this house. It was later found out that this is a very religious

family who chants several slogams like Rudram, Gayathri Mantras etc., and

performs puja daily/regularly. This incident came in all the newspapers and even

last week, someone was talking about this in a religious gathering.

I would strongly recommend all devotees to get some Maharudram chanting in a

CD/tape and play it frequently. You don't need to necessarily understand,

although there are thousands of books available with translation for this. I

recently purchased one CD about Lord Shiva that has Rudram and all important

slogams such as Mrityunjaya Mantram, Shiva Ashtothrams etc. I bought this CD

from a Hindu temple and almost positive that this may not be available in Amazon

kind of stores. If someone is interested, I can get this CD for you. Also today,

I will get to know one more audio CD series of Lord Shiva. I will post it later.

Thanks

Dear Basantji,

Sorry to hear about your ailments and other crisis. Please continue to chant

mahamritunjya mantra. Also please add Gayathri Mantra. It is much simpler than

mahamritunjya mantra. Gayathri Mantra is the most powerful mantra and gives you

protection against almost everything one can think of. Try to do 108 of this

also - chanting 108 times takes only 10 mts.

Since I am getting responses for two reasons, let me clarify few things: If you

are interested in only in listening to Rudram, then I can refer to a

commercially available CD. If you want to learn Rudram, then these CDs will not

be a good choice as the pandits in that CD would chant it way too fast and we

can't learn at that speed. For learning sake, you need the actual recording of a

class like mine. In my class, my teacher will say a word and I repeat twice. So

all my recordings will have this pattern. After I am done with one paragraph,

then I will attempt to say it all by myself w/o any help. I can upload the files

after I add some titles to each file so that one can understand what they are

listening. Currently, it has no titles or references.

Regarding Rudram, let me tell you all something. It is very difficult to start

with. The whole emphasis is given to how correctly we say each word with proper

modulations. Nevertheless, after few listening and practice, one can get well

versed at this.

As far as who can learn this - So far I have only seen Brahmins say this. But I

am sure any sincere Lord Shiva devotee can learn this. There are no special

preparations for this. All we need to do is to sit in front of Lord shiva

picture and Shivling, if possible and chant this. My teacher chants this on

every Monday evenings.

Hope this helps

Great idea of posting incrementally. Rudram starts with "Dhyanam" and

goes by "Anuvagham". There are 12 anuvagams in total. I don't know what

other things are after 12 anuvagams. I will get to know that soon!! I

can post each one every week. Please use the following links to download

and print the rudram, its translation etc.

http://www.carnatic.com/karmasaya/index.php?Rudram to get all the

information you need about rudram.

http://www.geocities.com/nayanmars/rudram_etc_English.pdf to download

rudram in English/Tamil/Sanskrit

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/02000H000Y to play rudram

online. You need to register yourself to play this. I will continue to

look for downloadable Rudram audio file so that you don't have buy

Mahesh Ji,

I would like to get the CD name and from where I can get it, as well as we

all are wating for your files to learn it.

Do you live in USA then I can pay the cost of shipping and would like to get

these files burnt on CD. OR

You can send me all files at bikramjitpandher

<bikramjitpandher . I live in Canada. Can you also tell

me any book to throw light

on Maha Rudruam. Any good books on Lord Shiva will be very helpful to grow

my knowledge.

Can any one translate Gayathri Mantra for me.

THANKS

RE: RBSC : Maharudram

Dear Basantji,

Sorry to hear about your ailments and other crisis. Please continue to chant

mahamritunjya mantra. Also please add Gayathri Mantra. It is much simpler

than mahamritunjya mantra. Gayathri Mantra is the most powerful mantra and

gives you protection against almost everything one can think of. Try to do

108 of this also - chanting 108 times takes only 10 mts.

Since I am getting responses for two reasons, let me clarify few things: If

you are interested in only in listening to Rudram, then I can refer to a

commercially available CD. If you want to learn Rudram, then these CDs will

not be a good choice as the pandits in that CD would chant it way too fast

and we can't learn at that speed. For learning sake, you need the actual

recording of a class like mine. In my class, my teacher will say a word and

I repeat twice. So all my recordings will have this pattern. After I am done

with one paragraph, then I will attempt to say it all by myself w/o any

help. I can upload the files after I add some titles to each file so that

one can understand what they are listening. Currently, it has no titles or

references.

Regarding Rudram, let me tell you all something. It is very difficult to

start with. The whole emphasis is given to how correctly we say each word

with proper modulations. Nevertheless, after few listening and practice, one

can get well versed at this.

As far as who can learn this - So far I have only seen Brahmins say this.

But I am sure any sincere Lord Shiva devotee can learn this. There are no

special preparations for this. All we need to do is to sit in front of Lord

shiva picture and Shivling, if possible and chant this. My teacher chants

this on every Monday evenings.

Hope this helps

Re: RBSC : Maharudram

Dear Mahesh ji,

Namaskar!!

Thanks mitra for such a nice information. I have got

curiosity to know about MahaRudram.

Dear friend I am suffering from various ailments and

financial crisis from couple of months and very upset

specially on illness. I am looking forward to use this

power to bring back harmony, peace and health in my

life.

Mitra, I do chant mahamritunjya mantra (only 11 times)

for well being but in absence of proper guidence I

feel I am lacking somewhere.

Could you pls tell in detail What exactly it is? How

one can learn it? What are the classes about? Is there

any muhurat, food havit etc to be followed for

learning the same.

Best Wishes

Dear Maheshji,

Namaskar!!

Thanks mitra for all the information you have given to

me. I have already started chanting mahamritunjya

mantra for 108 times from today. As suggested I will

also start chanting gayatri mantra from tomorrow.

I hope with your postings I will be able to learn

about maharudram. Would also need to know if there is

any puran or old literature available on maharudram.

Thanks once again.

With all best wishes

Basant K Chaturvedi

Dear Mr. Bikramjit,

Highly recommend Thomas Ashley-Farrand's book; Shakti Mantras

(Tapping into the great Goddess Energy within). He explains Gaytri

mantra in an easily approached way, as well as many other mantras.

The only negative thing is that there are no reference to the

tonation of the words written in roman script.

The book is written by an american vedic priest.

This book and many other books by the same author can be purchased at:

www.sanskritmantra.com

Kind regards,

With my audio files any one can learn Rudram - no doubt, as it is really slow.

The only area where one might find a problem is the tongue twisting Sanskrit

words. That also should be fine after few days.

I am happy to see several people who are willing to learn this. Like my teacher

says, it is all past punyaas that made us all to think in this direction. I soon

will post my first file and we will see how we progress.

RE: RBSC : Maharudram

Dear Maheshji,

Namaskar!!

Thanks mitra for all the information you have given to

me. I have already started chanting mahamritunjya

mantra for 108 times from today. As suggested I will

also start chanting gayatri mantra from tomorrow.

I hope with your postings I will be able to learn

about maharudram. Would also need to know if there is

any puran or old literature available on maharudram.

Thanks once again.

With all best wishes

dear friends,

what i see from english pdf form of the rudram is the same that i do every day.

the entire mantras recited while doing abhishekha constitute the

ekarudrabhishekha. As rightly said by dda ji the first part is the 'dhyanam'

followed by the 'anuvagam' . next is the 'anganyasa' part followed by the

'karanyasa' and then the 1 part of chamakam and then the 'rudram' starts . after

rudram the chamakam is followed.

in the initial anuvagam after dyanam we are actually describing the lord shiva

his form the physical, etc etc.. in praise of him .i.e '' Ashyashri rudradyaya

prashna mahamantrasya aghora rushihi anustup chandaha ..........'' to say i am

here to perform the pooja/abhisheka to the holy rudra who is so and so with so

and atributes physical etc etc.

on the whole to be more clear the initial dyanam and anuvagams are to purify

ourselves spiritually and establish the link between the atma and paramatma thro

the nyasa parts.

the rudram exceptionally being the way to praise the lord.

i remember having uploaded the anganyasa and karanyasa partto the files section

which was made from the complete cd that is being talked about. i shall upload

the entire thing in parts soon since many are interested . may be by monday.

Namaskar Mitra......thank you for your message and your additional

when it

was actually Maheshji who was the one mentioning this in a message before

mine.......sorry for the misunderstanding in the messages

Dear Dharamdevji,

I appreciate your humility but at the same time we all know that your

wisdom is boundless and deserve all credits. I am seeing only the tip of

the iceberg in the whole world of Lord Shiva. Besides my knowledge from

the school and childhood religious classes, I could see that this forum

is helping me a whole lot to dive deeper. I am lucky to get in touch

with folks like you, Kariji, Simoneji etc.
