Jim, you will also get plenty of advisement from those, on this list, who are more knowledgeable than I am of the scriptures. Though, I regularly read the Bhagavad Gita, (Heavenly Song) and find new revelations in it, with each reading. But, I will tell you about one of my own recent experience with a Three-Eyed Goddess. Last Navratri, as part of my celebrations, I played a CD of the "Chandi Path" (in Sanscrit) while reading it (in English). The Chandi Path is a three-hour recitation of the story of the creation and victory of the beautiful and mighty Goddess Durga, She who rides the tiger. The Gods were under siege by the demons, and the demons were winning. Desperate and discouraged, the Gods finally came together to create a warrior-victor to champion them, and save the universe. They combined all of their weapons and all of their powers to create the magnificent "jewel-lady," Durga. Lady Durga took residence in the Himalayas, "shedding light upon the mountains." After a brief time, tales of her stunning beauty and glorious presence enchanted the demon king. He sent his emissaries to propose marriage, reminding her that he was the greatest of warriors, and posessed the finest of objects. She replied that she had made a "thoughtless, girlish promise" to only marry the man who could defeat her in battle. This response enraged the demon king. He sent all of his armies against her. The Chandi Path is the tale of that battle. I do not understand much Sanscrit. But, hearing the recitation always reduces me to a puddle of tears-- JUST from the energy overload, created by the vibration of the words. Hearing it while reading it is almost too much..... Lady Durga is the Primary Protectress. She is supremely terrifying to all who would threaten her children, and supremely loving to her children. To see Her face is to know bliss and compeletness-- if you love Her. I agree that you can have direct experience of the Gods through meditation. I'm not sure a guru is necessary. I live in California.. we have many false gurus.. so I tend to avoid them. But, I meditate twice each day. You will want to learn the mythology, and then mediate on the images. It wil be helpful to use the right mantra for the Goddess aspect that interests you. I can recommend a book to start you off-- "Shati Mantras" by Thomas Ashley- Farrand. It's a good one for Westerners who are just starting out. It explains the various Goddess energies and forms, and the meditation mantras that one uses for each. Thanks! Guest guest Posted July 5, 2004 Report Share Posted July 5, 2004 Hi Kari, Jim and friends.... with all due respect and love, there is one element that must be present in any truthful understanding of the scriptures whether Vedic, Tantric or whatever tradition, and that is Consciousness. The ancient scriptures are revelations of the seers - enlightening men and women who cognized the nature of reality from the perspective of a very pure and expanded consciousness. Thus, their real impact and significance is revealed only in the light of that same Consciousness. To really understand them at an experiential level, where they are alive as impulses of Consciousness, you either need to be living at that level of awareness yourself or else you need to have a teacher who is at that level. Otherwise, it is roughly comparable to trying learn to perform brain surgery by reading books. It requires an adept and without that, you are really just creating a lot of confusion for yourself. Please do not think that I am being pompous here. I am studying the Tantric scriptures with a Master and there is no way I could ever have understood them on my own... so I am speaking from experience. Same is true of any spiritual practice such as meditation. Sure, you can learn and practice techniques and mantras on your own and derive some benefit, but it will never move you to any real spiritual awakening unless it is coming from an awakened teacher. I think it is fair to say that no one has ever truly awakened on their own and no one ever will. Yes... there may be many half-baked teachers out there, (especially in California, ha-ha). But nevertheless, the bottom line is that you have to find an authentic, realized teacher if you are really serious about spiritual transformation. I know this goes against the Western ideal of self-reliance and personal authority, but in the spiritual realm, it does not work that way. Real enlightenment has never been a do-it-yourself affair. Only a torch can light another torch.
