Wow, I didn't know that the Vedic New Year....started on this day...?

I would have thought it was on the first day that the Sun begins it's

movement into Aries, in the Spring....

Though this day, does seem to coincide with the Spring equinox which is

celebrated as a very important day in Western Astrology.

Does anyone know the relationship between this day, described below and the

day the Sun moves into Aries, for the first time...?

Sincerely,

Mark Kincaid

RBSC : Happy New Year, it's 5106 or 2061 or 1926

Chaitra Shukla Pratipada - Hindu lunar new year day (March 21, 2004)

The Hindu lunar new year is celebrated on the first day of the

bright half of

the lunar month of Chaitra. The Hindu lunar new year is also known

as Navreh in

Kashmir; Varsha Pratipada or Nav Samvatsar in Punjab and the Hindi-

belt region

of North India; Gudi Padva in Maharashtra and Goa; (Chandramana)

Yugadi in

Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh; Sajibu Nangmapanba in Manipur; Cheti

Chand to the

Sindhis; and Hari Raya Nyepi in Bali, Indonesia.

Today begins the 5106th lunar year of Kaliyuga. For dating purposes,

the Vikram

Samvat and Shalivahana Shaka eras, honoring prominent kings within

the Kaliyuga,

are commonly used. Today we welcome year 2061 of the Vikram Samvat

called

"Hemalambi" and year 1926 of the Shalivahana Shaka named "Taarana."

It is believed that on this day:

1. The universe was created by Brahma

2. Lord Ram was coronated in Ayodhya, after returning from exile

3. The Kaliyuga began (in 3102 BCE)

4. King Vikramaditya ascended the throne of Ujjain upon defeating

the Shakas (in

58 BCE)

5. King Shalivahana ascended the throne of Pratishtana upon

defeating the Shakas

(in 78 CE)

The lunar new year day is also the beginning of the nine-day

festival of Chaitra

Navaratri in honor of Para Shakti, and the nine-day recitation of

the Ramayana

preceding Ram Navami. It was also on the lunar new year day that the

Arya Samaj

was founded by Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati (in 1875 CE). In Bali,

Nyepi is

observed as a day of absolute silence - no action is performed, no

noise is

made. Even the airport is shut down for the day.

May the new year find you all in much happiness, prosperity and

health. May the

new year also bring much-needed reforms to the Hindu world.

-: UGADI (new year) FESTIVAL :-

The Hindus celebrate their new year according to two systems known

as

CHANDRAMANA and SAURAMANA. Those who follow the lunar calendar

observe Chandramana and those who follow the solar calendar observe

Sauramana.

This year Chandramana Ugadi is on 21-03-2004, and

Sauramana Ugadi is on 13-04-2004.

Hindus observe their new year in a simple way. They take a special

bath applying oil to the body in the morning and perform pooja of

their family deity. They keep the almanac in front of the deity when

they do pooja. Then, they read the salient features of the new year

from the almanac. Afterwards, they eat a small piece of neem leaf

and

jaggery mixture as a wish for a long life with full of health and

prosperity. Sweets and other delicious foods are prepared and

enjoyed.

There is a cycle of sixty years called samvatsaras in the Hindu

systems and each year is called by a name.

The other features of each year are ---

a)Two ayanas -- Uttarayana and Dakshinayana.

Uttarayana denotes the movement of the Sun and the Moon towards the

north.

Dakshinayana denotes the movement of the Sun and the Moon towards

the

south.

b)Six seasons in each samvathsara.

c)twelve months in each samvathsara,

d)two fortnights -- Suksla paksha and Krishna paksha in each month

Sukla paksha denotes the movement of the moon from new moon day to

full moon day.

Krishna paksha denotes the movement of the moon from fullmoon day to

new moon day.

Hindus observe a number of festivals dedicating themselves to

various

rituals to lead a happy and prosperous life.

The name of this New Year is TAARANA.

This wishes all a HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW

YEAR.

Love baba
