Guest guest
Dear Sharon ji Namaskar My Friend and thank you for your message........wow this is a tall order......what you are asking is for someone to actually explain terms of vedic astrology and this is something people study for years....if you only need the meanings of words then it would be great if I could direct you to any online Sanskrit Dictionary where you can look up the words you are needing to know.....other idea would be to type in any word you wish to know on the internet on google.com and you will most likely have a search page to go to as the Hindu Community worldwide has placed most all this information on the internet Hope this helps My Friend Wishing you and Family the Best of Health Happiness Success and Prosperity DharmaDev Arya In a message dated 2/5/2004 10:53:46 PM Pacific Standard Time, operanut writes: > > > Greetings, > > Could somebody please explain the meanings of the terms in Vedic > Astrology? Guest guest
Greetings, Could somebody please explain the meanings of the terms in Vedic Astrology? My report has words like Rahu, Rashi, Naksatra, etcetera. I am a native English speaker and got a vedic forecast from rudraksha-ratna. If someone is kind enough to tell me the meanings of the words, I would greatly appreciate your kindness. I can send someone the whole message to read if they would like. I greatly enjoy learning about the cultures of India, on this list. Thank you and Namaste, Sharon

Guest guest
To translate into Western astrology terms-- and maybe offer a little explanation. Raashi is what we call rising sign. As you know, in tropical (Western) astrology, major emphasis is on the sun sign. In Vedic astrology, it's on the rising sign. In Vedic astrology, time of birth is critical. It's a bit less on an issue, in Western. Rahu corresponds to what we call the north node of the moon. Ketu corresponds to the south node. Rahu and ketu have a much more interesting function in Vedic astrology. The nodes of the moon highlight karmic issues-- I think Rahu deals with future karma, and Ketu deals with past. Nakshatra is your birth star. Mine is Revati, which is the 27th on the list. There's a TON more to it, than that. These are just short, supeficial definitions. I'm not an astrologer, and I don't have any knowledge past a few fundamentals. But, Vedic astrology is more "siddereal," and Western more "tropical." So, there is also a difference in I-forgot-how-many degrees re: where the houses are divided. This means that you might have the same rising sign in both Vedic and tropical Western astrology, or there might be a difference of one house. There are some astrologers on this list, who will probably enlighten you further. But, you might want to think about checking out your local metaphysical bookstore, for a book on Vedic astrology, if you are interested. Thanks!
