I haven't checked out any links about conch shells or shanka but please try Google, , Msn and other search engines; pretty sure something will turn up When I get round to looking them up, shall share the info here with you and our respected friends. The Right-Handed Conch Shell is rarer than the Left-handed Shell. Arjunaji is correct in mentioning that in America, most places sell Whelks instead of the genuine Right-Handed Conch - at least this is also what I heard from a few friends over there. I have two very old conch shells gifted in 1980 by a dear friend and wonderful Gyana-Guru in Calcutta. One is Right-Handed and the other is Left-Handed. From Rudra Centre, I've also bought conch shells for various friends in Australia who have since benefitted from the use/worship/therapy, etc. in respective ways. Have used both right and left-handed conches in spiritual work. For blowing during puja, prior to meditation and ceremonies, the Right- handed conch is used. Have also soaked this conch in water for sprinkling. My Left-hand conch is only for worshipping, not for blowing and the mouth of this has never been opened. Some Info about Left-Handed Conch Shell: ------- The Left-handed conch is also known as the "Conch of the Opposite Hand". When holding the head towards you, the open part is at the left-hand. This is the conch that has more sound (at least this is what I'd experienced with the ones I have). The Left-hand conch is regarded as the Brother of Goddess Laxmi who is also favoured by Lord Vishnu. In ancient times of the Aryan culture, it symbolised brilliance and auspicious beginnings. The conch is blown during all festivals and auspicious ceremonies. It is said to fill the atmosphere with new life and fresh, positive beginnings for those aspiring to new beginnings. No worship was regarded as being "completed" with the blowing of the conch shell. The sound emitted by the conch banishes negative or dark entities and unseen malevolence for the radius within which the sound of the conch is heard. It is blown during ceremonies and can also be utilised for Yoga or Yogic practices relating to exercising the lungs and respiratory tract. Very useful for blocked noses and sinus problems in some cases too. It is said that sound of the Right-hand conch helps with settling and calming family and other disputes, disturbances and destructive vibrations. --------------------- Perhaps our other friends here may have respective individual experiences regarding Conch Shells.
