Namaste Viswa,

In the Santana Dharma, conch shell is regarded as pure, pious and

used in many religious rituals. That apart, there was a certain

research done at Berlin University in 1928 about the sound of the

conch shell. It was concluded in this research that the sound

vibrations of the conch shell has the ability to destroy

microorganisms that create "sound disturbances". The resonance

produced by the conch destroyed bacteria within the range of 200

feet and tiny organisms from 2600 feet. It is also said that the

conch eradicates bacteria that causes diarrhea and malaria, able to

remedy leprosy and epilepsy amonst other ailments.

About the Right Handed Conch Shell you are enquiring:

-------------------

When its head faces the worshipper, the "open" part faces the right

hand of the person. It is said that the conch was conceived at the

time of the churning of the Ocean and Lord Vishnu held it in his

right hand. Goddess Laxmi that took birth from the Ocean and Lord

Vishnu married her, hence the close relationship of the conch with

Laxmi.

There is no differenece whether you blow into any conch of whatever

size as the influence does not lessen. It is believed by some

scholars, pandit, religious individuals, etc. that the Right Handed

Conch Shell bestows prosperity and wealth; i.e. it can assist with

financial progress (depends on one's karma how much or how little

but always enough for one's needs) but it does not fulfill human

passion.

Method for Worshipping Right-Handed Conch:

--------

After a bath on Thursday, take the conch and place on a plate. Wash

conch with Panchamrit, place conch on red cloth and worship with

sandal mixed with saffron, kapoor, flowers, rice, dhoop and ghee

lamp. Use Japa mala and repeat 108 times:

"Om Hreem Shreem Kleem Shreedhar Karasthaya Payonidhi Jataya Shree

Dakshinavart Shankhaya Hreem Shreem Kleem Shree Karaaya Poojyaaya

Namah"

Feed a Brahmin boy and give him some money (Dakshina). Spread the

red cloth over a silver pot and put conch shell on it. Worship

conch shell daily with devotion like a Murti of a Deity. Use wooden

pot if you don't have silver but place a small piece of silver next

to the conch. Worhip together like Vishnu and Laxmi. The conch's

open part must face upwards and its back should rest on the seat.

The head of the conch should face the worshipper and the hind part

towards the wall.

Hope this helps.

Wishing you success and happiness,

Jai Maa

Hi Cindy,

Nice to see you around again! Its been quite some time. Sorta

missed you. Very much my pleasure to share (only if I know the

answers :) There's the Left-Handed Conch Shell that is used in Puja

too. Both right and left shells alleviates aggravating vibrations

of "psychic noise pollution" that may intrude upon the nervous

systems of stressed or vulnerable folks; i.e. depending on the level

of sound or noise pollution/disturbance and an individual's

resistance levels. Thought this may interest you too.

Much love

Hi Sy,

Nice to hear from you directly...very sweet...

The conch shell information does interest me, I find it VERY fascinating...

Do you have a link for more detailed info? I guess I can Google it

myself...Do you use either (right or left) in your spiritual work? If

so, would you care to say which you use?

I wonder how one decides which is best to use: right or left?

Thanks for your kind words, Sy.

Namaste syzenithji,

Many thanks for the information you provided that was really great. sorry to

disturb you again I have another question ,Just like rudraksha is there any

precautions we should follow before worshiping the conch?.Should we refrain from

taking non vegetarian food if we are worshiping the conch.WIll this cause any

negative effects if anything goes wrong while worshipping the conch.

Thanks in advance for your views.

Hi Cindy,

Be careful when you try to purchase a right handed conch. Many shells sold for

that are actually North American Whelks. I have seen many pictures on the net

that were clearly whelks not conchs.
