Guest guest
Dear Mr. Ole, Thank you very much for opening an interesting topic on 'Ivory idols'. Personally I feel that one should not use 'Silk' for any religious rituals and should use only pure cotton for this purpose. The Silk, we use is made after killing thousands of silk cocoons by boiling in water. The cocoons are boiled when there is a pupae inside it. If pupae inside the cocoon, is allowed to metamorphise in a adult moth, it break opens the cocoon, affecting the staple quality and length of silk fiber. Why we should use silk for religious and puja purpose which is a product after killing small beautiful creatures who have not even seen this world ? Does not this comes under a 'Tamas vritti (nature) ? Few people may debate on this by saying that 'Silk kills all germs'. This not correct. Scientifically, silk has static electricity, and in fact, it attracts dust particles with millions of micro-organisms onto it. When killing is not allowed for performing any rituals, why should we kill silk worm pupae in its premature state of metamorphosis ? Thanking you and with best wishes. Yes, with all certainty, I would assume that if an elephant has been killed to obtain the ivory, it is highly inauspicious and very bad karma to use this for a murti or what to speak of a deity. The elephant is a very sacred animal. If the ivory has been obtained from a wild elephant that expired naturally or a tame elphant was treated well, then it is different. There may be some details about this in the Manu Samhita, the most famous of the Vedic Law Books.
