Guest guest
Dear Gary, Good question. Yes, with all certainty, I would assume that if an elephant has been killed to obtain the ivory, it is highly inauspicious and very bad karma to use this for a murti or what to speak of a deity. The elephant is a very sacred animal. If the ivory has been obtained from a wild elephant that expired naturally or a tame elphant was treated well, then it is different. There may be some details about this in the Manu Samhita, the most famous of the Vedic Law Books. Guest guest
Dear Garyji, In my opinion buying any idol or product made of ivory is inauspicious. Most of the ivory available now is the result of poaching. Even if the piece you see is not, buying it tells the poachers there is a market for ivory and indirectly supports their efforts. Try a parad Lakshmi or one made of another material. There are even gold ones available if you want something like that. Guest guest
I avoid any product made of elephant ivory, for fear of offending Lord Ganesh.
