Guest guest
Dear Kirk and Listmembers, This is probably very redundant to most members here, but possibly woth mentioning. In the book "Gods of Love and Ecstacy: The Traditions of Shiva and Dionysus" by Alain Danie'lou, the author states on page129, "The sacred plants of Shiva are mainly the Pippala (ficus religiosa), called the "Lord of trees"(Vriksha-natha), the herb dharba or kusha, the plant called Rudraksha (the eye of Rudra), whose seeds are used to make Shvaite rosaries, the vine, the Indian Hemp, etc." From page 127-130 the author describes the relationship of man to the animal, mineral and vegetable worlds and how the world of the Gods are expressed in or through the vegetable world. I simply found it an interesting overview. Sorry again if this is "old hat". Om Namah Shivay, Shivay Namah Om Joseph Rippy
Guest guest
Thanks Joe, I wasn't actually aware that the Peepal tree is for Shiva too. This is very good news as I have one on order, as well as a Bilva tree. Thanks for this. I will check this book out. - jrip_37923 Wednesday, April 09, 2003 6:41 PM Sacred Plants of Shiva-Kirkji Dear Kirk and Listmembers, This is probably very redundant to most members here, but possibly woth mentioning. Guest guest
Dear friend, In the sacred "Bhagavadgita" the sermon given by lord krishna to arjuna in the sacred "Mahabharatha" , Lord krishna explains to Arjuna, that he is omnipresent and would appear in one exalted form in all living things on earth. His divine presence in one form in all iving things are called "Vibhuthi" in sanskrit. In that lord Krishna tells Arjuna that among trees he is the "Peepal", among birds he is the "Garuda"(Brahminy kite),among ordinary men he is "Rama",etc..So predominantly peepal tree is worshipped in India as representative form of lord Vishnu among trees(it is called "AshwathaNarayana",Ashwatha is the name of peepal tree in sanskrit). However if anyone is having "Shani graha dosha"(shani graha= planet saturn)as per the planetary positions during his birth in his horoscope ,one of the solutions to overcome the bad effects as per indian scriptures is to chant the following mantra while doing either 32, 64 or 108 "pradakshina(to go round in clockwise direction) namaskaras" around the peepal tree. "Moolato brahma roopaya, Madhyato vishnu rupine, agrato rudra roopaya, vriksha raaja ya te namaha".The meaning of this mantra is"At the moola(thast is the root of the peepal tree resides lord brahma, at the trunk lord vishnu, and at the top branches lord rudra, to such a divine tree which is the lord of all trees(vriksha raja)I prostrate in reverence.Hence rudra(shiva) also resides in the peepal tree.
