Rudraksa The Properties and Biomedical Implications By Subas Rai

Chapter V

Epilogue Part One

The present investigation as undertaken to identify and characterize

the mythological Rudraksa of different Mukhi and to prove or disprove

their bioeffects as described in the classical literature brings the

following facts to the fore :

Rudraksa proper is the seed of Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb of the

genera of the Elaeocarpacae family. The seeds are covered with thorny

protrusions and varying number of surficial furrows that characterize

them into various Mukhis. Their specific gravity was found to differ

and fall in the range of 1.1 to 1.6 pH measurement of their extracts

showing some of them to be neutral while others to be alkaline adn

acidic in nature.

These variations may be attributed to maturity of the seed and locale

of the tree they come from and hence may not be taken as

distinguishing criteria.

A study of their thorn surface tips shows marked difference among

their microstructures and may thus be used with caution as

distinguishing criterion for various Mukhis.

Elemental analysis reveals that carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen

form the bulk constituent of the seeds while their metallic content

is less than 0.5 per cent.

Magnetic susceptibility measurement reveals Diamagnetic Properties

for Two Mukhi and Four Mukhi Beads, Paramagnetic Properties for One

Mukhi and Three Mukhi Beads and Five Mukhi to 8 Mukhi Beads and

Ferromagnetic Properties from Nine to Fourteen Mukhi Beads.

Inductance (L) of all the Mukhis was found to increase with

increasing frequency implying thereby their frequency dependent

Ferromagnetic Properties. This Ferromagnetism has been attributed to

the ferrous state of Iron (Fe++)forming the trace constituent

(0.001%) of the Seeds.

Similarly the capacitance of all the Mukhis was found to increase

with increasing frequency excepting that of Two Mukhi and Four Mukhi

Beads.

The Rudraksa of the size of the Emblic myrobalan seeds were found to

show maximum inductance and capacitance as compared to the smaller

ones. Because of this reason Rudraska of larger size have been

praised in the Puranas and smaller ones are rejected for use.
