The Rudraksha is the seed of the tree, genus Elaeocarpus. Its leaves

are simple serrulate and petiolate. Flowers are hermaphrodite found

flowering takes place in the rainy season and fruits are found in

months of November and December.

The fruit is a drupe, globose, purple, tubercled, grooved and

distributed in subtropical regions. They are found in Himalayas,

Nepal, India, Java and Indonesia.

Apart from Sanctity attached to them they do have medicinal value as

well which runs as follows

The most common species of them are six in number

All kinds of Rudraksa are commonly used in the Ayurvedic Medicines.

When anyone suffers from Small Pox or Chicken Pox the seed or fruit

is rubbed on a clean stone and the paste is given to the patient to

eat. It is also helpful for the prevention of poxes. It is also

believed that those who wear Rudraksa do not suffer from blood

pressure and according to some physicians this fact bears mention in

Ayurvedic Medicine
